Give us Feyenoord, please (the “be careful what you ask for” edition)…

So. It’s all but settled then. We’ll face one of Feyenoord or PSV Eindhoven in the round of 16. First things first, it has to feel like drawing either Dutch side is better than drawing either of the Italian sides (I might enjoy seeing us slay at the San Siro, but that’s another story for […]

Comment on It’s clearly time to put the Nwaneri hype-machine into overdrive. Past time, in fact. by Jon Shay

One has to hope that Saka will return to fitness so that the two can share minutes, one to slowly restore Saka to the starting line up and two to shield Nwaneri from the burgeoning expectations on him. Liverpool look a little bit creaky, maybe just a touch, but we've closed the gap to them despite our injury woes. Of course, running the table won't be enough to catch them. We'll need them to slip up several times if we're to have any chance at winning the league - and I'm not writing off the Champions League just yet. Should be interesting to see how the matches later today go and to see how these might affect whom we draw...

Too much of a burden to place on a young player and asking him to play multiple positions makes even harder for him. The odds of a burnout, injuries, and failure to reach the expected heights are great and this all comes because we have a team that left the cupboard bare. With no other options we may be throwing this lad to the wolves or into deep waters to see if he can swim, at the risk of failure. The concept of playing the long game and building a squad that can win for years is being tossed in the (vain) hope of catching Liverpool (or staying clear of the clubs just behind us) and hoping the fans will forget our failures in the past two transfer windows.

Clearly, in Ethan Nwaneri, we have a preternatural prodigy of a player, one who is already drawing fawning comparisons to other players at home and abroad. At just seventeen years of age, one thing rings like a clarion call in the night: we simply must ramp up the hype around this lad as high as […]

Comment on Merino, Calafiori, and Arteta bring totaalvoetbal back to the Arsenal! by palladio43

https://woolwich1886.com/2025/02...

Well, we made it through another match, but barely.... One has to wonder whether things might not have ended as well with Havertz on the pitch given that both scores were often those opportunities he tends to bottle up. I believe we will meander through and win those matches against the minnows, e.g., ManU, et al, but can we make it past Chelsea, Forest, and a few others who are just below us, let alone Liverpool? Meanwhile, despite looking shaky (as if we were not), Liverpool wins when they need to and that is all they care about. Seven points is still a lot and even if we were to beat them, we would still need five points more to pass them. Quite the hill to climb.

Merino, Calafiori, and Arteta bring totaalvoetbal back to the Arsenal!

https://woolwich1886.com/2025/02...

To be clear, the 0-2 scoreline suggests a rather comfortable win over Leicester, but the reality is that we laboured for most of the match with the worse-than-hapless Raheem Sterling doing his best to join the ranks of Chelsea castaways to nick a living at the Arsenal. In the end, though, it was Arteta, not […]

Comment on Are Liverpool rattled? They look like they’re feeling rattled. by Jon Shay

I was surprised at Slot's squad selection. He didn't even bother to include many senior players and could find no answer through subs or tactics to overcome Argyle's tenacity. That's the magic of the FA Cup, eh?

Plymouth sit 23rd in the Championship, a full 41 spots below Liverpool. Liverpool's mix of second stringers and youth should still have had more than enough to find their way past. Slot seems to have gotten it wrong with both his XI and his bench. Credit the Greens for their efforts. Both sides have their grievances against Oliver - not necessarily proof that his decisions evened out. Then again it does throw cold water on the idea that he was in the bag for the hosts. As for pressure, there might be some pressure on Arsenal if we were healthy. We're now looking at a front three that consists of Trossard, Sterling, and Nwaneri for most of the rest of the season pending the returns of Sake and Martinelli. The real pressure has to be on Liverpool as the current leaders and proven winners.

Are Liverpool rattled? They look like they’re feeling rattled.

https://woolwich1886.com/2025/02...

Yes, this one was always going to be an emotional cauldron. The 120th and final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, with the hosts and their visitors about as far apart as can be. Liverpool started the day nine points clear in first place; Everton started the day again needing points to stave off relegation. Both […]

Of Epimetheus, Havertz’s injury, and Kierkegaard…

https://woolwich1886.com/2025/02...

Of all of the Greek myths, was anyone more hapless or useless than Epimetheus, the Titan whose supposed gift was afterthought? Keep that in mind as we launch into an ex post facto investigation into Kai Havertz’s season-ending hamstring tear and our failure to sign a striker in January. If only to get my historical […]
