18.1.2024 08:08Comment on Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner by What's it to you?
@johnmark wow JM. That’s a powerful post. In the 80s and early 90s a couple of my closest friends, who were brothers, were also pretty racist. It made me uncomfortable to hear that part of them but it took me a long time to realize that I was part of the problem, as part of that circle of friends, I tacitly ignored it. Finally had to cut them out and it’s been a couple decades since I had any contact, no regrets.

I don’t remember if I mentioned growing up nearby in Springfield MO. My own parents were adamant about treating everyone well and making them feel welcome. I heard a *lot* what you describe from other various people around me though. I heard variations on it every day of my life as a kid, and it didn’t shock me because that’s just what people said.

18.1.2024 03:27Comment on Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner by Tek (the nique is silent)Content warning: the following post contains racial slurs and frank depictions of racist hate speech I’ve spent weeks trying to figure out my approach to writing down my memory of this event. I considered writing a dramatic reenactment as a screenplay. I might still, but after much thought, I think I shouldn’t hide behind anything […]
18.1.2024 02:38Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner1985: Rural Northeastern Arkansas When I was 12, I had an… well, I don’t know quite what to call it, but I think of it as an existential crisis. It started as an overwhelming sense of dread whenever we would drive in to our place of work. We ran a crafts business, and I was […]
4.12.2023 02:24Son of a Preacher ManYou may have noticed the name of this blog and wondered what this is all about. Am I going to scream at you that abortion is murder and stopping the baby killers? No. Well… unless the subject is infant and maternal mortality in the United States, in which case I will tell you that our […]
