If the hire car company processes the bond by freezing the amount – so not a transaction, not taking it from your card – then the credit card option will be easier and cheaper. When you use your Wise card you’ll need to have the amount available, even if the company just freezes the money. Therefore I always use a credit card for rental car deposit/bond. All other road trip payment then are done via Wise. So no experience using the Wise card for the deposit payment when hiring a car. Before making any decisions, contact the car rental company directly to ask about their policies regarding debit cards. There are several companies that also accept debit cards, as long as there is enough money on them.

Many thanks Martijn for the prompt response. I have just checked my BarclaysCard Credit card fees and they unfortunately charge a foreign exchange fee (2.99%) on each non-sterling purchase. Not sure if a deposit payment woudl classify as purchase. And I am afraid that if I use my credit card for the deposit in ISK than the bank would still apply the 2.99% rate on the deposit, which might not be released once the car returned and I have to pay back that fee. Which could ruck up a significant £50-£70 amount if calculating with £2500 deposit for a car. On that case the 2x conversion I think would be still much cheaper with the wise card, but as I see all car hire company details in their requirements that they only accept credit cards (and the Wise is a debit card). Wondering if they will accept the Wise debit card or they will ask me to present credit card which will cost me a lot in terms of exchange fees. Any advise experience on this?

Hi Kristof... Yes that is correct. If you don’t have the currency in your account or if the currency isn’t supported as a separate balance (like ISK - Icelandic Krone), Wise will automatically convert the amount for you. They will take it from whichever available balance has the cheapest conversion fee. The same process applies for the refund: when the deposit is returned in ISK, Wise will convert it back to your primary currency or the currency with the cheapest conversion fee. Wise is a great solution when traveling – it’s my favourite - but there are situations where using a different card might be preferable. For car hire and deposit freezes or payments, using a credit card can be advantageous. This way, the deposit won't affect your spending money, and there are no issues or worries when the deposit is released or refunded. That would be my preffered option as the deposit is usually a significant amount, using a credit card can provide more flexibility and peace of mind.
22.1.2025 00:53Comment on Now you know the answers to the most asked questions about Wise Multi-Currency by MartijnHi, My question would be about renting car deposit with Wise DEBIT card. <span>I used to pay (charge) for car hire deposits in the local currency from my Wise card (prior picking up converting money to the local currency account and pay with my Wise debit card for the deposit(s) - fuel deposit + car deposit. This used to work nicely if the Wise card have a supported account for the currency.</span> However I am planning to visit Iceland but seems Wise not supporting ISK with a separate account for Icelandic Krone (ISK). My question, how would this work if the local currency not supported a separate account on Wise? As I understand Wise still would convert the funds to the local current automatically when the company charging (not just blocking like on credits cards) the deposit in ISK, however I am not sure when returning the car, they should send back the deposit, what currency I would receive? Is it possible at all to receive money (ISK) on Wise? or would would this ISK deposit converted automatically back to the primary currency? I try to avoid transfer fees on a credit card that would be applied using GPB credit card I guess. I think I would loose on the conversion rate + the foreign curency fee they would apply even if its just blocking the amount on the card. Am I thinking right? Many thanks for the help. Kristof

Hi Traveller.... The Wise Multi-Currency Card works as follows. If you make a payment in currency X and you have X on your card then the payment will be taken from your X amount. If there isn’t enough X, the system will use the next available & most-favourable currency jar on your account. If there is no X at all on your system the whole payment will be taken from another currency jar. The system will always use the currency that is the most favourable to you, so that’s the currency the payment was made in. In your case, the hotel payment in GBP will be processed in GBP if you have GBP in your account. Happy travelling.

Take your American road trip to the next level: pay like a local! by MartijnSeems like you were paid by wise to write a nice article, unfortunately no actual comparison between the exchange fees of a regular bank and the exchange fees/transfer fees that wise charges. Checked with my back (ING) and they charge about 0.5% in unfavorable exchange rates and 0 other fees so that seems about similar(or even less) with what wise charges for a currency transfer of EUR to USD. These are just examples of things you spend your money on while on holiday but you dont mention the actual fees you paid Wise in total.

Hey Menno... No worries. The Wise card is a Visa debit card, the most popular and best-accepted card worldwide. In Australia and New Zealand, most people use cards issued by Visa. There are just a few small stores - mom & pop stores aka dairies - in NZ that might not accept the card as their EFTPOS (payment) machines see the card as a credit card. But in all major supermarkets, hotels/hostels, bars & restaurants the card is accepted. No worries. I've used the Wise cards on trips in heaps of countries worldwide - USA, Australia, and several European countries - and the only two countries where it was challenging was in The Netherlands (as Maestro is still king there and not Visa/MC debit) and Germany (as they still love cash over there ????). See for more details about <a href="https://www.123nz.nl/wonen/wereldwijde-pinpas-voor-reizigers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow ugc">my experiences with the Wise card in this blog post (in Dutch)</a>. But it is always good to not depend one just one card, no matter the type of card or the brand. So having a different Visa/MC debit card or a credit card as a back-up is the smart way to go. Having a credit card as a back-up is great, especially if it's a regular credit card (not prepaid). Then you'll have some money to fall back on in case of an emergency. Or you can use the card when renting a car or campervan and there's a bond involved. Then it won't come out of your regular spending money.

Get it done before arrival! In reply to <a href="https://travel.geek.nz/digital-nomad/be-wise-pay-local-currency-no-fee/#comment-197">Harold</a>. Hi Harold... Correct. You simply transfer money from your Rabo account to your Wise account (free as it is a Euro zone transfer). Then via the app you can exchange your Euro amount to for example USD. When you pay with your card in the USA the USD amount will be deducted from your USD account and there are no exchange fees. Easy as. What do you mean by Wise is connected to ISC? You can also add money via ISC card but that isn't the best way. Bank transfer (or iDEAL) is easy & fast.

According to the repair shop which they doesn’t even support with detailed repair docs: the high end products PRONE to serious faults. All your books in serious danger as their backup totally unreliable whatever the screen says. Account security text never makes to US numbers. Start up in Russian after they advise you to reset. Hi Patrick... Oh, that is a tough question... And a great reminder that it is time to update this article again. A lot of devices have been updated or new ones have been launched. I can understand that for a lot of new users reMarkable's subscription service is a deal-breaker. It sure would be for me. I'm still happy with my reMarkable 1 and its <span style="color: rgb(119, 119, 119);">legacy plan.</span> The one thing that bugs me more and more is that it can't handle certain e-books, the ones that use DRM. You have to keep checking whether an e-book is sold as having a digital watermark instead of having DRM. Made the mistake once to buy an e-book I can't read on my reMarkable. If I would be in the market for a new e-ink tablet I would also check out one of the <a href="https://travelgeeknz.mystagingwebsite.com/go/supernote">SuperNote devices</a> and maybe <a href="https://www.pine64.org/pinenote/" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow ugc">PineNote</a>. The latter is just to see the progress of that project. It is still in the experimental phase. I haven't checked out the others mentioned in the blog post in a while but will def do that soon. It is time to add new info to this article. I'm still a happy reMarkable user. It is still being used regularly and no issues. So yeah, I still recommend that one.

I need my device for note taking, daily task, calendar if possible, light pdf editing, and i like to take notes while I read books. I own a renovation company and have stick it notes and notebooks all over. My thought was the boox devices are more of a tablet. I do like the split screen and ability to may take notes on a webpage article but it feel like boox offers way more features but limited to what it does great but does offer more flexibility) The new origin looks great very similar to remarkable more than boox (more tablet like) plus the back light makes it a little more friendly to read books or work ar night. Remarkable subscription kind of upsets me as a nee customer as i have a device they handicapped and i don’t like that they don’t have a road map on what the new features we may see are. I can pick up a used remarkable 2 for $285 with folio. Any advice on what may work best or what you would consider now?

My recent Maestro screenshot was from a free account application that was recently done by a mate residing in the Netherlands. if you already have an account and then change the address it won't change the region of your account. Hi Keith... No worries. You can use the web interface functionality to transfer files to/from the reMarkable e-paper tablet, no matter the OS you are using. <strong>"How to enable USB transfer on your reMarkable tablet</strong> <ul><li>Connect the reMarkable with a USB cable to your computer.</li><li>Open Settings, and then Storage settings.</li><li>Here you'll see the choice Enable USB web interface. Enable this.</li><li>Open a browser window on your computer and enter the address 10.11.99.1.</li><li>Note: The reMarkable must be connected with the USB cable before the USB web interface can be toggled on.</li></ul> This will show you a web window of the content on your device, and you can drag and drop content into this window to transfer epub and PDF files onto the device. Even though this happens in a browser window, the file transfer happens through the USB cable, and not over Wi-Fi. You don't need to be connected to the cloud to use this functionality."
18.2.2022 10:56Comment on Is reMarkable still the winner in the battle of the e-paper tablets? by MartijnJust recently saw these even exist! Looks Very Cool! But I am stringently a Linux User and I need to know if I can do even the basics like USB connect to my Linux desktop and use a filemanager to add/remove/copy files to/from such a device - I don't want phone integration since our Phones just call home and leak private data everywhere etc... If I can do the basic file management operations with my Linux Desktop, I may very well consider getting one for stand alone use. I learn long ago - the cloud is nothing to seriously trust - yeah seems convenient but only goes so far.

Hi Bruno... Yeah I have to admit that reMarkable's decision to change to a paid Cloud Storage model, can be disappointing and a deal-breaker to new customers. I haven't seen or tried the Kobo Elipsa but looking at the specs their note-taking app lacks features like layers. It is a simpler e-ink tablet that mainly focuses on the e-book reading part. Note-taking is a basic add-on. Maybe the Onyx Boox Air e-ink tablets are a good alternative for you. They have better specs, come in a 7.8 and 10.3-inch version and they focus on note-taking and sketching, just like the reMarkable. See for <a href="https://travelgeeknz.mystagingwebsite.com/go/boox-air">more info about the new Onyx Boox Air tablets</a>. I’ll add the specs to the table in this article in a few days.
20.12.2021 06:52Comment on Is reMarkable still the winner in the battle of the e-paper tablets? by MartijnGreat article! I'm not comfortable with the (basically) mandatory subscription, since sync is really a must to me. Do you have any thoughts on Kobo elipsa? It seems similar with the ability to load almost every kind of ebooks. On the other hand, I am not so sure if it is a slickiest to take notes.
19.12.2021 09:36Comment on Is reMarkable still the winner in the battle of the e-paper tablets? by BrunoIn reply to <a href="https://travel.geek.nz/gadgets/remarkable-paper-tablet-compare-alternatives/#comment-171">Ron</a>. The short version... Without a Connect plan you: <ul><li>can transfer files via USB cable between your reMarkable and a computer</li><li>have limited access to the reMarkable cloud service. See below for more info.</li></ul> New customers that don't want to use Connect have the option to select No Plan aka don't subscribe. To quote reMarkable's support info: "you don’t need a subscription plan to enjoy better thinking with a reMarkable paper tablet. For customers who don’t want a monthly plan right now or cancel their subscription, our 'No Plan' option gives you access to basic note-taking features. So you can still keep your notes organized, write with different tools and templates, annotate PDFs, sketch, and read without any distractions. You'll also be able to download our apps, import files, and use our Read on reMarkable feature. However, you'll have <strong>limited access to our cloud services</strong>, apps, and features. If you cancel Connect or Connect Lite, then you’ll lose access to unlimited storage and file sync. Files already synced to the reMarkable cloud will remain on your devices, but you’ll need to open your files once every 50 days to keep them synced. Any files that haven’t been opened within 50 days will stop syncing, and changes you make on your device will only be saved locally on your paper tablet. If you cancel your Connect Plan you’ll also lose access to Google Drive and Dropbox integration. Any documents that have been saved to your paper tablet will still be available. However, you won't be able to browse, upload to, or download from these services from your reMarkable any longer. There are 2 Connect plans to choose from: <ul><li>Connect Lite @ $4.99/month (this includes unlimited cloud storage)</li><li>Connect @ $7.99/month (unlimited cloud storage + Google Drive and Dropbox integration + Handwriting conversion and more)</li></ul> Or select No Plan. Without a subscription, you can still use the cloud to store and sync your notes. However, files will stop syncing to the mobile and desktop apps if they haven’t been opened in the last 50 days. They’ll still be automatically stored on your paper tablet. <strong>How 50-day sync works</strong> Documents that you haven’t opened for more than 50 days will stop syncing across devices. These documents will only be available on your paper tablet, not on the desktop or mobile apps."

Appreciate that response. The only other question I’ll bother you with is being able to upload files without using the connect app. From doing research there are some sites that say you need the app and some that say you do not. I’m spending all this money on the device I would hate to buy a monthly subscription to something that I really don’t need. Thoughts?

Hi Ron... You sure can. You can share notebooks (and notebook pages), files, PDFs, and ebooks by email from your reMarkable as PDF, PNG, or SVG files. But you can also use Screen Share to instantly present what you are writing or sketching on your computer. There are several ways to share info from your device with non-reMarkable users.
