I’m Charles Fitzgerald and this is my blog. I write infrequent, self-referential, overly parenthetical and verbose posts mostly for my own amusement. Stylistically, think a longform version of Twitter.

6.11.2024 20:48The Western States of AmericaPayments companies are hot. Square has a $3.25 billion valuation. Braintree just sold to PayPal for $800 million and Stripe is probably worth even more. The venerable PayPal was 40% of eBay’s revenues last year and remains its growth engine. Square is supposedly on a trajectory to process about $15 billion in transactions this year […]
6.11.2024 20:48Chump ChangeAmidst a lot of specious and ignorant commentary on recent events at Microsoft, Horace Dediu’s recent podcast “The Limits of Executive Power” raises some interesting questions around how does a company successfully fight disruption, the impact of the CEO (great man theory vs. social history with disruption as technological deterinism) and more, can you make […]

22.10.2023 05:42Comment on Platformonomics TGIF #27: October 20, 2023 by Mahesh Prakriya'@Collin - definitely looks that way. They don't break out AWS vs. retail capex in quarterly reports (only annual), but their guidance is AWS CAPEX up, retail continuing to decline, and overall number continuing to decline (down double digits for 2023). So looks like a big haircut on retail spend. They're touting "regionalization" of the fulfillment network which maybe is just software. Hard to tell.

5.8.2023 14:50Comment on Platformonomics TGIF #17: August 3, 2023 by Collin SullivanGlad to hear. Still playing with format but I like to track the threads too. PE ruins everything they touch (the healthcare buyouts are literally lethal), but will focus on software.
4.8.2023 14:31Comment on Platformonomics X (formerly TGIF) #16: July 28, 2023 by Charles FitzgeraldI'm enjoying the round-up format. I do enjoy your long format work too, but this is good to keep a finger on the pulse of stories as they evolve. Completely agree about private equity, this strategy isn't just limited to tech, it's happening in real estate also.
