Congratulations, Pete, that was quite a year. I really enjoyed our adventures and I'm looking forward to more in 2024!

2023 in cycling

https://slidewielder.wordpress.c...

It’s been quite a year on two wheels. As we near the end of December, I’ve racked up just over 5,500 km on my various bikes. Not quite as much as my record of over 6,000 in 2020 (when cycling was one of the few recreational activities you could do without fear of catching the […]

Comment on CycleTour2023 wrap-up by Terry Knowles

Great summary, as always. An average speed of 15.8 is pretty impressive! And the pictures are lovely. So is this likely to be your last looooong trip, then? I'm certainly game for a 4-5 day trip next year, but I'm afraid I'd draw the line at that. Look forward to talking to you in person soon, although it may be in December. T.

CycleTour2023 wrap-up

https://slidewielder.wordpress.c...

Going on a bicycle tour is simultaneously the easiest thing in the world and a surprisingly demanding endeavour. It’s easy because the touring life is simple. You spend your days in the saddle watching the scenery roll by, and any logistical considerations revolve mostly around meeting basic needs: Where do I sleep? When and what […]

CycleTour 2023: Days 38–40: A dream of Vienna

https://slidewielder.wordpress.c...

For classical musicians, Vienna is a kind of pilgrimage destination–a place we should come at least once in our lives. And in hindsight, it occurs to me that this bicycle tour from Lyon to Vienna was indeed a kind of pilgrimage, a musical Camino de Santiago if you will. If you were to use a […]

What an amazing experience. You guys are such an inspiration. BTW you can always stop off at our place on the way back from the airport; we're just minutes from the bike path in NDG. So glad Sonia was ok after the car incident! Yes, 95% of drivers are considerate and safe, but there's that 5% who apparently got their licences out of a cereal box... Looking forward to seeing you soon! - TK

CycleTour2023 – Days 42 and 43: The road home – part 2

https://slidewielder.wordpress.c...

Warning: long post alert! TL;DR version: We made it home, and it was another couple of long days to get here. Laufenburg is a lovely town, and had we not been quite so tired after yesterday’s ride, we would have spent the evening wandering around. Instead, we had supper at the hotel’s restaurant patio overlooking […]

Regular readers will be wondering where my missives about Vienna are. Friends, our time in Vienna made such an impression that it will take me some time to digest it all. I hope to provide an account of those three full days soon. But now, back to our regularly scheduled bike-tour programming. No getting around […]

My new favourite white wine. Fruity in the nose and nicely tart on the palate. I sometimes feel I drone on in these entries. Plus, after 64 km and a glass of wine, it’s not always easy to find the muse. Always leave ‘em wanting more, I guess? :)

CycleTour2023 – Day 37: Vienna at last

https://slidewielder.wordpress.c...

Today we arrived in Vienna, ostensibly the end point of this trip. “Ostensibly” because we still have another 5 days left, including 2 more days of cycling. But I have been thinking of them, correctly or not, as part of the “return journey.” I include below today’s single photograph, of a fountain in the town […]

CycleTour2023 – Day 36: A transcendant day

https://slidewielder.wordpress.c...

Friends, this is why I love cycle touring. Just when the grind is getting to you, when you think you’ve seen it all, when you’re longing to sleep in your own bed, that’s when the road reminds why you do this, why you should never take things for granted, why every day is a gift. […]

CycleTour2023 – Day 35: Land of Melk and strudel

https://slidewielder.wordpress.c...

From a cycling standpoint, today was just another lovely day, though we did get (lightly) rained on for about 30 minutes–only the second time in 5 weeks I’ve had to dig out my rain jacket while cycling. Nothing that would even remotely phase us, being the seasoned cycle tourists that we are, but noteworthy in […]

CycleTour2023 – Day 34: A delightful day on the Danube

https://slidewielder.wordpress.c...

Just a wonderful day. Another flat ride on a wide, well-paved path beside the river; the blessed tailwind for much of the day; good weather (low 20s, partly cloudy); lovely scenery; lovelier company; and a fine view of the Danube from our balcony at the very nice gasthaus we have ended up in. I am […]

CycleTour2023 – Day 33: Boring in the best way

https://slidewielder.wordpress.c...

Today was more what I was expecting the ride down the Danube to be: a lovely, flat, paved bike path down a tranquil, quiet river. Aside from a 5 kilometre stretch beside the highway as we neared Linz, it was an extremely pleasant ride. Uneventful is probably a better word than boring. We started at […]
