One of the passages in Schmidt and Kruger-Ross’ chapsters on integrated multimodality hit me powerfully this week…”the way that we live our lives day-to-day is typically multimodal,” (Schmidt and Kruger-Ross, P. 117). To be Trinidadian (or Trini, as we say it) during Carnival week anywhere but home is like water for chocolate…thinner, paler, colder. My […]

18.2.2024 05:10Comment on TeacherLife: Aural Literacies by ShaiFenwickHi Shai, It's so true: we need to pay attention to what technology students are using outside the classroom and then incorporate those technologies in the classroom. It reminds me of the investment advice from Warren Buffet who said we need to watch what young people spend their money on and invest in those things because they are the future of our economy. The more we teachers can mirror what students are doing naturally, the more effective our teaching will be. Great post --- thanks for sharing!
17.2.2024 15:46Comment on TeacherLife: Aural Literacies by Marti LimbockerIn my undergraduate degree (anthropology) I was fortunate to have a couple of classes with the amazing Dr. Gus (Panthaide) Palmer, Jr. You can see him speaking on Kiowa texts and the role of language here. I don’t understand Kiowa, but I do understand something about the way he is speaking and I love the […]
15.2.2024 04:03TeacherLife: Aural LiteraciesI loved how you integrated visual literacies into your classroom! Using this for a way for students to show their understanding of a reading, allowing them to have a creative way to express is so amazing!
12.2.2024 00:14Comment on Teacherlife: Visual Literacies by Jessica ChapmanHi Shai, What an interesting post, with clever and engaging visuals! I like how you describe things, like "we begin as we mean to go on," "visual literacies have a hierarchy in the classroom," and "where they will both compete and be competed for." Because you express yourself in a unique way, it causes me to think in a unique way. I appreciate that. Thanks for sharing!
11.2.2024 19:36Comment on Teacherlife: Visual Literacies by Marti LimbockerI love how you point out, students need to know their own misconceptions. This will allow for a better understanding of the concept. I like how you refer to Bloom's also, many people outside the educational world do not know we all learn on a the hierarchal advancements of Bloom's.
11.2.2024 19:03Comment on Teacherlife: Visual Literacies by Barbara DuncanWow. This is a great post and I loved reading your viewpoint and thoughts about the readings but also other matters. You are great at this blogging thing and I think you're sharing a lot of good ideas and points with people who might be teachers or even people outside of teaching!
11.2.2024 01:20Comment on Teacherlife: Technology, modern literacies, and the nature of childhood. by Morgan DraggVisual literacies appear to have a hierarchy in the traditional classroom. Text over images, some images over others, and all static things over shifting things in terms of what is more or less constructed as “valid” source material for education. We keep coming back to Bloom’s revised taxonomy in the exploration of different types and […]

I love being part of NCTE. The National Council of Teachers of English is a plural, thoughtful, scholarly group of researchers and practitioners, and this is evident in their conference and across their publications. They interrogate and interpret literacies as communication practices oriented within society. The communication landscape I grew up in is vastly different […]
25.1.2024 05:01Teacherlife: Technology, modern literacies, and the nature of childhood.I am a teacher living in a red state and working in a mixed ethnicity/density/religious affiliation space. I teach in the high school and college context, while working on my doctorate in education. Today is a virtual day for us, with an ice storm riming the outdoors in frigid sparkle. Even the dirt was iced […]
22.1.2024 21:29TeacherLifeI’ve been wanting to write this one for a number of years greater than ten. I don’t even know how many. It’s a coming out of the closet post, and those are always hard. The problem I struggle with regarding compartmentalization is I needed to break apart the intimate struggles of life to get through […]

Dendrochronology indicates vineyards existed in forests along the southern shore of the Caspian sea as early as the Pleistocene era and continued through the Neolithic in farming communities. The road has been rocky, both from the legacy of partisanship and economic malfeasance of the last administration as well as various new unfolding crises. Yet the new president has met the challenge with relative honesty, and […]
