Thanks for the info! Yes, it really surprised me that they do this, and made me sceptical about every buying another Xiaomi device.
11.3.2025 09:59Comment on Media playback tablet running GNOME and postmarketOS by Sam Thursfield<p>@samthursfield I have owned two Xiaomi mobile devices. I needed a Windows PC to install the unlocking software, and I had to wait thirty days for the unlocking process to complete once it was initiated. It was fiddly and not at all a straightforward process.</p>

9.3.2025 14:47Comment on Media playback tablet running GNOME and postmarketOS by Ojocle OlonamA couple of years ago I set up a simple and independent media streaming server for my Bandcamp music collection using a Raspberry Pi 4, Fedora IoT and Jellyfin. It works nicely and I don’t have to play any cloud rent to Spotify to listen to music at home. But it’s annoying having the music … Continue reading Media playback tablet running GNOME and postmarketOS
7.3.2025 11:48Media playback tablet running GNOME and postmarketOSHappily I have survived the intense storms of January 2025, and the biting February temperatures, and I’m here with another status update post. I made it to FOSDEM 2025, which was its usual self, a unique gathering of people who care about making ethical software, sharing cool technology, and eating delicious waffles. In the end, … Continue reading Status update, 19/02/2025
19.2.2025 16:06Status update, 19/02/2025Happy new year everyone! As a new year’s resolution, I’ve decided to improve SEO for this blog, so from now on my posts will be in FAQ format. What are Sam Thursfield’s favourite music releases of 2025? Glad you asked. I posted my top 3 music releases here on Mastodon. (I also put them on … Continue reading Status update, 21/01/2025
21.1.2025 11:05Status update, 21/01/2025Its been an interesting and cold month so far. I made a successful trip to the UK, one of the first times I’ve been back in winter and avoided being exposed to COVID19 since the pandemic, so that’s a step forwards. I’ve been thinking a lot about documentation recently in a few different places where … Continue reading Status update, 13/12/24
13.12.2024 11:39Status update, 13/12/24A month of low energy here. My work day is spent on a corporate project which I can’t talk about due to NDAs, although I can say it’s largely grunt work at the moment. I’m not much of a gamer but sometimes you need a dose of solid fun. I finally started playing through Age … Continue reading Status update, 21/11/2024
21.11.2024 12:44Status update, 21/11/2024I’ve participated in two internships this year, and interns — who are usually busy full-time students — often ask “How do you get time to contribute to open source?”. And the truth is that there’s no secret formula. It’s tricky to get paid to work on something that you give away for free, isn’t it? … Continue reading Status update, 16/10/2024
16.10.2024 11:00Status update, 16/10/2024This year PyCon Spain happened just down the road from me in Vigo, and I was able to attend with a few folk from Codethink. Python conferences are usually great as there’s so much variety in the talks and the bar for quality is also quite high. I’m not sure when the videos will be … Continue reading PyCon España 2024
9.10.2024 10:08PyCon España 2024Short update this month, which has been full of travels and new things. I spent a few weeks in the UK. Most importantly I got to see Altin Gün in the Manchester Psych Festival, but I also visited family and friends, spent a while in the Codethink offices, and so on. It’s been a month … Continue reading Status update, 21/09/24
21.9.2024 19:21Status update, 21/09/24I mentioned in my last status update post that I had just received a Fairphone 5. Here are my thoughts on it after a month of use. 15.8.2024 12:07Status update, 15/08/2024Was a great weekend for me with a trip to Ovar, Portugal to watch amazing Bixiga 70 and eat delicious Portuguese food. Not such a great weekend for the England men’s football team or Donald trump. Work has been hard this month, my client work transitioned into something of a support role for a system … Continue reading Status update, 15/07/2024
15.7.2024 15:17Status update, 15/07/2024Podcasts If you’re into podcasts, the Blindboy Podcast is possibly the best one. Recent episode The State of the World begins on a pointy rock off the coast of Ireland that houses a 6th century monastery. 18.6.2024 15:59Status update, 18th June 2024Seems this is another of those months where I did enough stuff to merit two posts. (See Thursday’s post on async Rust). Sometimes you just can’t get out of doing work, no matter how you try. So here is part 2. A few weeks ago I went to the USA for a week to meet … Continue reading Status update, 19/05/2024 – GNOME OS and more
19.5.2024 16:36Status update, 19/05/2024 – GNOME OS and moreThis is another month where too many different things happened to stick them all in one post together. So here’s a ramble on Rust, and there’s more to come in a follow up post. I first started learning Rust in late 2020. It took 3 attempts before I could start to make functional commandline apps, … Continue reading Status update, 16/05/2024 – Learning Async Rust
16.5.2024 12:10Status update, 16/05/2024 – Learning Async RustIn which I meet QA testers, bang my head against the GNOME OS initial setup process, and travel overland from Scotland to Spain in 48 hours. GUADEC 2023 was a rare occasion where … Continue reading Status update, 17/04/2024
17.4.2024 13:41Status update, 17/04/2024GNOME 46 just released, and with it comes TinySPARQL 3.7 (aka Tracker SPARQL) and Tracker Miners 3.7. Here’s what I’ve been involved with this month in those projects. Google Summer of Code It wasn’t my intention to prepare another internship before the last one was even finished. It seems that in GNOME we have fewer … Continue reading Status update, 20/03/2024 – TinySPARQL and Tracker Miners
20.3.2024 16:59Status update, 20/03/2024 – TinySPARQL and Tracker MinersLooking back at this month its been very busy indeed. In fact, so busy that I’m going to split this status update into two parts. Possibly this is the month where I worked the whole time yet did almost no actual software development. I guess it’s part of getting old that you spend more time … Continue reading Status update, 19/03/2024 – GNOME OS and openQA
19.3.2024 09:46Status update, 19/03/2024 – GNOME OS and openQASome months you work very hard and there is little to show for any of it… so far this is one of those very draining months. I’m looking forward to spring, and spending less time online and at work. Rather than ranting I want to share a couple of things from elsewhere in the software … Continue reading Status update, 16/02/2024
16.2.2024 14:16Status update, 16/02/2024Happy new year everyone! For better or worse we’re now well into the 2020s. Here are some things I’ve been doing recently. A post on the GNOME openQA tests: Looking back to 2023 and forwards to 2024. I won’t repeat the post here, go read it and see what I hope to see in 2024 with … Continue reading Status update, 16/01/2024
16.1.2024 10:32Status update, 16/01/2024A new discovery of mine for 2023 was the #CrossBorderRail movement. It’s mainly a project of Jon Worth who is investigating all current and former border crossings in the EU by train and bike. His motivation, aside from the fact that I guess he likes to explore, is to highlight obvious issues and improvements which … Continue reading Cross-border rail in 2023
