I made this a while back for a Fedi shitpost, and it’s still fun. https://roosenmaallen.com/tats Let me know if you do something fun with it!
22.11.2024 17:12Knuckle TatsFollowing up on a fedi post, I made a website shell to display random article summaries/links. https://gitlab.com/eroosenmaallen/towne-crier Articles are input as text files, the a build script compiles them into JSON and puts them into the site; the repo includes a gitlab-ci script to publish the output to GitLab Pages. I hope it might be … Continue reading "New Toy: Towne Crier"
15.11.2024 16:18New Toy: Towne CrierAfter some configuration sadness, the CheerLights fedi bot is back up and running, now at @CheerLights@mastodon.art. In a Fedi post, mention the bot or the hashtag #CheerLights along with a colour (blue!), and connected RGB lights all over the world will change together. Remember, even when things seem bad, we are all connected.
6.11.2024 17:29CheerLights 2024With the announced shutdown of botsin.space, I have moved my stable of friendly bots over to https://mas.to. My current pack includes: CheerLights, @cheerlights@mas.to – control RGB lights all over the world with the CheerLights network. We Are All Connected! Multiverse Coordinates, @Multiverse@mas.to – In an infinite multiverse, it’s nice to know where you are. This … Continue reading "2024, the Great Bot Migration"
3.11.2024 16:392024, the Great Bot MigrationI’m pleased to announce the launch of my latest Mastodon bot, Sun Tzu’s The Art of eBooks . It’s a Markov chain bot trained on (you guessed it) The Art of War. I’ve also published the code on GitLab, as a simple starting point if others want to stand up a Markov bot with their … Continue reading "Statistically Probable Ancient Wisdom"
2.11.2024 21:29Statistically Probable Ancient Wisdom“We support us” This is the punk ethos running through so many of the communities I’m a part of or associated with. We take care of each other, and in a capitalist hellworld that means moving money around. Moving money today means using a third party service if some sort, you can’t pass a $20 … Continue reading "Mutual Aid Options in Canada"
7.2.2024 14:12Mutual Aid Options in CanadaJust bought one of these second hand, thanks for the only available online copy of the manual!!
29.12.2023 18:26Comment on Manual: York Fitness 3230 Home Gym by JdApplication group at dayjob ran into a guardrail today. They need an FE-generated ID token, low-security, unique in a low-volume setting. Sounds like a UUID to me!But.`crypto.randomUUID()`, in order to prevent low-security IDs being used where high-security is needed, is not accessible outside a secure context, and the application in question runs in an insecure context. On … Continue reading "Unix Principle: Don’t prevent foolish things, because that prevents clever things"
10.8.2023 20:11Unix Principle: Don’t prevent foolish things, because that prevents clever thingsToday is the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia. The date of 17 May was specifically chosen to commemorate the World Health Organization’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder. The Day represents a major global annual landmark to draw the attention of decision makers, the media, the public, corporations, opinion … Continue reading "International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia"
17.5.2023 13:45International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and BiphobiaAs part of our recent moves toward better fitness, my partner & I picked up a secondhand exercise bike in the fall. Nice enough bike, but batteries were left in the display module when it went into storage, so it was dead when we got it. Enter the Arduino nerd; I set out to build … Continue reading "Bike Display Replacement"
13.1.2023 15:54Bike Display ReplacementAfter seeing several people ask about a tool to download their toots, I’ve started building one. Masto-DL will archive all your toots into individual json files to grep and analyze to your heart’s content.
25.11.2022 11:53Initial Release: Masto-DL<a href="https://roosenmaallen.com/author/admin/" rel="ugc">@admin</a> i was able to load this post into and reply from Mastdodon

Linux has definitely grown up a lot since I first put this together. I don't have a parallel port any more, but if you publish an updated howto I can add a link to it from here.
26.4.2021 13:44Comment on Iomega Parallel Zip Drive in Linux by Eddie RoosenmaallenI have an Iomega Zip 100 parallel port drive (Model Z100P2). With Lubuntu 20.10 I didn't need to add the two lines to /etc/modules.conf for the ppa module; all I needed to do was enter the command 'sudo modprobe ppa' to immediately load the ppa module. I then added ppa to the list of modules in /etc/modules-load.d/modules.conf (which is actually a symlink to the file /etc/modules) so that the ppa module is loaded automatically at boot.

I had a bunch of old iOmega Zip 100 disks and an old parallel Zip drive that I wanted to copy all of the files off of. Your modprobe ppa did the trick perfectly on Manjaro with kernel 5.10.x. Thank you!!!
23.1.2021 01:51Comment on Iomega Parallel Zip Drive in Linux by Chrislol, finally the zip 100 parallel port is working on Ubuntu 16.04 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+ × 2 after several attempts with Puppy linux and Windows XP only needed Then load the module by running modprobe ppa as root

15.4.2014 19:14Comment on Mac OS X and the Motorola RAZR v3c by motola v3 specs user guideHi Eddie, I've been using your modified class and I was wondering if it supports Google style authentication (where it doesn't ask you for a username, just a URL). If it does (or doesn't, for that matter) do you have any ideas on how to implement it?
14.9.2009 08:21Comment on SimpleOpenID for php by GarionBuy their tools? I don't think they will sell them to end-users but there are *koff* way to acquire them. Verizon users can access an older version of the phone's OS/firmware that offers unrestricted OBEX capabilities. Not for the faint of heart but possible . . .
