Comment on Russia challenges international law with Black Sea prohibition zones by David Tints

It seems to me that countries with large armies and naval power try to dictate who can use the open seas, international waters which is not acceptable to any one on this planet.

Three Russia hypersonic missile scientists arrested for treason

https://romeosquared.eu/2023/05/...

Russian authorities have arrested three scientists working on hypersonic missiles. Supposedly two of the arrests happened last summer, whereas the last one happened in April. That reports The Moscow Times: “Members of the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ (RAS) Siberian Branch warned that the criminal cases risk setting […]

Typology of military thinkers

https://romeosquared.eu/2023/04/...

It is striking how different actors view warfare through very different lenses. Amos C. Fox has an interesting typology of military thinkers on The Strategy Bridge: “The Futurist camp, for instance, asserts that drones, artificial intelligence, and cyber are the future of armed conflict. Meanwhile, the Traditionalist camp does not drift far from the musings […]

It seems that the link "Thoughtful essay by C Thi Nguyen for Aeon" is no longer functional. It looks like an interesting article. I am subscribed to your youtube channel. I also watched your interview with Joe Broe. I think Joe might be optimistic concerning the effect of the mid-term elections and party change in the US congress. Neville Chamberlain, Robert Best, and Ezra Pound all have their successors. However, there is no point in borrowing trouble from tomorrow, as there is quite enough from right now.

Comment on When ASW gets too precise: British frigate hits Russian submarine with sonar by Sean Carsty

https://romeosquared.eu/2022/01/...

The captain was intentionally trying a 'new tactic' of getting closer to the sub the voiceover says. Kind of surprising (ro me at least) the way female crew were walking about with a towel round them. Not a terribly discipled ship or captain is my impression. On the other hand, people act strangely around TV crews using the fly on the wall documentary method; it affects the subjects job performance and usually not for the better. I never understand why that kind of access is granted to media folk, when there are so many examples of it rebounding to the PR detriment.

Comment on Book Review: The Long Hangover — Putin’s New Russia and the Ghosts of the Past by Sean Carsty

https://romeosquared.eu/2018/08/...

Russia was prepared to accept the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe monitors in the Balkans war and in fact unsuccessfully urged Serbia to do so during the war . Russia was also assessed as although having differences with some OSCE members, basically cooperative with the OSCE and allowing agreeing to them patrolling the conflict zones in the Moldavia /Transnistria problems during the 90s. America objected to an agreement between Moldovia and Russia. Nothing for Russia maintaining its influence in its 'near abroad''. "Even if Putin goes away, these ideas are ingrained in a generation of Russians." It is questionable whether any generation of Russians would not consider Ukraine becoming aligned with a military alliance including America but excluding Russia to be a fighting matter. It must be remembered that Russia under both the presidencies of Yeltsin and Putin privately asked if it could join Nato and was fobbed of with talk of procedures. There was none of the fast track pre announcement that Ukraine got begining in 2008. The Ukrainian strategy is to wait for the Russian leadership to give up. But even if it wanted to, ending the war without capturing all Donbass, and Odessa too maybe would entail accepting a catastrophic decline in Russia's self perceived prestige by failing to levy war unto the bitter end. The international perception of Russia having determination and relentlessness would be things of the past and what is the point of having nuclear weapons. if everyone thinks there is evidence you probably lack the hard driving implacability to use them in the last resort. That becomes even more important if your military forces have been bested by a median sized country.

Comment on Russia has a now or never dilemma in Ukraine by Sean Carsty

https://romeosquared.eu/2021/12/...

.In the early 2000's there were Nato countries holding exercises in Ukraine, even in Crimea!, but the political tendencies in Ukraine that elected Yushchenko president twice were finding expression, although he was twice twice overthrown him by street demonstrations. The second time was particularly blatant and that was why Putin took Crimea. The rebellion in Donbass was a real indigenous one, although it received essential support from Russia. The election of Zelensky was due to a desire for peace but nationalist demonstrations made him do a U turn after initially agree to enact the provisions of the Minks accords that Ukraine had agreed to to end the Donbass low level conflict. "NATO agreed at Bucharest in 2008 that Ukraine would become a member of NATO, but there is evidently no consensus in the Alliance to make this happen anytime soon". That was true but American gets what it wants , which is why since Biden came in Ukraine has been getting special favours Crucially, the 2008 declaration on membership ceased to be a dead letter (even though Georgia the other country announced to be joining by Nato in 2008 was attacked months later by Russia). In 2021 Nato officially reiterated that Ukraine would join at some point, and a menacing Russian build up started Later last year Ukraine used Turkish drones and Javelins in combat for the first time, and the the second build up began. So that 2021 announcement by Nato in combination with the use of drones and advanced anti tank shoulder weapons was the cause of Putin deciding Ukraine was now part of the Western military alliance against Russia and "that being the case, we'll fight). It is not clear that another Russian leader would have decided differently. It may be mentioned that both Yeltsin and Putin asked if Russia could join Nato "For every year since 2014," The Ukrainian armed forces got more professional, but did not get lethal weapons from America during the tenure of Obama (he vetoed Blinken's wish to supply them). Trump reluctantly authorised some, but when Biden came in (with Blinken as his chief advisor on the issue) the tenor of American led support changed as evidenced by the US getting Nato to give the June 2021 public re-announcement of the 2008 declaration on Ukraine joining sometime in the future. And since late 2021 they started using US advanced weapons on the rebel Ukrainian ethnic Russians. So no, I do not think that it was a slow dawning on the Kremlin, i think it was unambiguous evidence furnished by the Biden administration that Ukraine was going to be part of what is an unambiguous anti Russian military alliance that made them decide war was necessary. They made a better job of it than the US did invading Cuba. .

Comment on Chasing the wrong kind of misinformation: The HMS Defender case by Jack Rancher

https://romeosquared.eu/2021/07/...

I think that's a very good point Anders. Sadly, western journalists (particularly UK ones) are largely un-informed and have a Pavlovian reaction to un-critically believe that Russia is incapable of telling the truth about anything. Hence their bizarre predicament in this case of parroting London's lies whilst denouncing Russia's truth, and the evidence of the embedded BBC journalist. The net result of reflexive Russophobia is once again negative - in this case, missing the point and failing to inform readers of the real issue. Let us hope that eventually a more sober and analytical approach to Russia is able to overcome the now embedded and un-helpful phobia.

Russia and the West moving into state of more “professional antagonism”

https://romeosquared.eu/2021/07/...

The Russian Prosecutor General has declared Bard College an “undesirable organization”. This means that any Russian citizen who maintains a relationship with the American liberal arts school faces up to six years in prison, while all foreign professors and students are banned from Russia. Bard runs a mini-campus in Saint Petersburg, so the number of […]

The argument that Russia’s security zones around Crimea are legal

https://romeosquared.eu/2021/06/...

Since HMS Defender’s recent freedom of navigation operation close to Crimea, there has been an interesting public debate about the legal aspects of innocent passage. My attention has been drawn to this article by professor Stefan Talmon where he makes the case that Russia’s suspension of this right in certain areas in the Black Sea […]

Comment on HMS Defender’s encounter with Russia’s coastguard off Crimea by Jack Rancher

https://romeosquared.eu/2021/06/...

I think you're conflating innocent passage with FONOPS when they are two different things entirely under UNCLOS. Indeed, FONOPS by warships are often used and viewed as provocative statements. In this sense the UK's action was deliberately provocative and I suspect London's nose has been put out of joint by the US-Russia summit.

HMS Defender’s encounter with Russia’s coastguard off Crimea

https://romeosquared.eu/2021/06/...

Here are a few quick thoughts on yesterday’s incident where Russian ships and aircraft fired warning shots on the British destroyer HMS Defender off Crimea. This was a deliberate freedom of navigation operation (FONOP) by the Royal Navy. HMS Defender purposefully transited closer than 12 nautical miles from Crimea. This point is important to stress […]

Do tripwire forces work?

https://romeosquared.eu/2021/06/...

Not according to Paul Poast and Dan Reiter. In this article in War on the Rocks titled Death without deterrence, or why tripwire forces are not enough they argue that nobody is deterred by a militarily insignificant body of soldiers whose only job it is to die. Though tripwire forces offer little deterrence power, larger […]

Russian submarines are dangerous, says U.S. general

https://romeosquared.eu/2021/06/...

Joseph Trevithich writing for The Drive: A senior U.S. military officer has again sounded the alarm about the threat that advanced, very-quiet, cruise-missile-armed Russian submarines, as well as Chinese ones, increasingly present to the United States. At a hearing on Capitol Hill yesterday, U.S. Air Force General Glen VanHerck, who is head of U.S. Northern Command […]

Comment on Russia’s new Karakurt-class corvette is an aggressive little warship by Ghost Ship

https://romeosquared.eu/2018/10/...

I always reckoned the Buyam-M class was designed to allow Russia to increase the number of cruise missile launch tubes it could operate under the INF by basing them on a boat. Russia could have built VLS on barges located on rivers and lakes across the length and breadth of Russia but that would have been a bit obvious, but basing them on boats that could operate near inshore meant they could be under an air defence umbrella and reload fairly quickly. And in the event of a shooting war, boats could be strung out along the length of the Baltic-White Sea Canal to be able to shoot at most of Europe except for the Iberian Peninsula. Now that the INF has gone the way of the Norwegian Blue, there is no need for so many ship-based tubes when you can build TELs or container-based VLS. Perhaps what you see as design flaws are actually features. Who ever knows with the Russians?

It's more saber rattling because of the recent tensions in Belarus. Russia is probably sending a message as much to Belarus itself, as the West. But I don't think anything is imminent.

Comment on Russia signs contract for new versatile helicopter carriers by hallepernia

https://romeosquared.eu/2020/06/...

"Just imagine the forceful message it would send if Russia had such a ship lingering off Tripoli these days" - I'm not convinced. It's not like Russia has many of the assets required for long range naval power projection. When Russian surface action groups have to bring tugs every time they venture out of port, one can understand my skepticism. LHDs or not, the Russian navy is no match for NATO in blue water naval ops.

Blackhawks are in mass production at Sikorsky and they have tons of them just sitting around awaiting specific mods. But Sikorsky itself is not without it's delays, looking at the Canadian Sikorsky CH-148 Cyclone fiasco.

Comment on Why does Russia break the INF Treaty? by KrisK

https://romeosquared.eu/2018/11/...

Let's see who's the US president after their 2020 election. If it's still Trump/someone similar enough to Trump, then the last sentence of the post is probably moot. There's not much point in hoping Trump/someone similar to him will have the political will to negotiate. That said, he's not really known to be a stickler for his own comments, so take it with a grain of salt (or plenty of it, whichever you prefers).
