Folk festivals in 2024

https://qwandor.wordpress.com/20...

I’ve been to a bunch of different folk festivals this year, some I’ve been to before and some I haven’t, and I have a few more planned before the end of the year. People sometimes ask which festivals I recommend, so perhaps this list will help with that too. So, starting at the start… I […]

Fairy light controller

https://qwandor.wordpress.com/20...

One of my housemates has a lot of fairy lights. Most of them were battery powered, each by a little pack of 3 AA batteries, which seemed somewhat wasteful. They are great for parties, but turning them all on and off individually is kind of a pain too, so I wanted to make them mains […]

Balfolk May Weekend

https://qwandor.wordpress.com/20...

I went to Krakow last weekend for the first edition of the Balfolk May Weekend, a lovely little festival that some friends of mine organised. There was lots of good music, good friends, good dances and good hugs. I like small festivals, I find them more friendly, and there’s less of a problem of not […]

Jordan

https://qwandor.wordpress.com/20...

Seeing as Google+ is no more, I’m going to try posting links to photos on here again. I recently went to visit Jordan for a week, to visit some friends and sightsee for a bit. This post will mostly just be links to photos, so do follow through to the albums and see the captions […]

Smart homes and ESP8266s

https://qwandor.wordpress.com/20...

I’ve recently been playing with a bunch of smart home stuff, based around the Google Home ecosystem. I have a Google Home, Google Home Hub and JBL Link View in various rooms, a Chromecast and Chromecast Audio, a Nest thermostat, a bunch of cheap smart light bulbs, and some Sonoff switches for the ceiling lights. […]

Thanks for your thoughts. Cell phones can be fantastic for this type of thing. What do you do when your phone is out of coverage? I know there are GPS data loggers, do you use one of those? Or do you always geotag in coverage areas? I have found some good articles for newbie geotaggers like myself. This is one that talks about geotagging very generally; pros/cons, equipment, software, and what not: http://www.paintshoppro.com/en/landing/geotag-photos/. And this one goes into a little more detail about different equipment: http://cameras.about.com/od/Traveling_with_a_camera/a/Geotagging-Cameras.htm. Like your article they have some good info in them. Check them out. Thanks.

Christmas and New Year

https://qwandor.wordpress.com/20...

I spent Christmas in London this year, so it was pretty quiet. I still find Christmas in winter weird, it’s all cold and miserable, and I find London winters hard. The afternoon of Christmas Day I went over to my friend Matthew’s place for Christmas dinner, which was nice. His parents and some of his […]

Awesome! Thanks so much for this writeup. I did everything you said and it worked like a charm. It's worth noting that the GPS Visualizer Tool also has a time offset field under their advanced options.

Much dancing

https://qwandor.wordpress.com/20...

I spent two recent weekends at two quite different folk dance festivals, neither of which I had been to before. The first was Dance Around the World at Cecil Sharp House in London, and was quite varied. It ran all day Saturday and Sunday, with three streams of workshops plus one of performances during the […]

Good post! If you want an alternative to GPS Vizualizer tool, I suggest to have a look at this free converter program: http://gpx2kml.com/ It can convert KML file to GPX format and vice versa, depending on your needs. You can try it and see how it works. Thanks!

Geotagging photos with Google Location History

https://qwandor.wordpress.com/20...

When I take photos on my Nexus 5, it automatically geotags them, which is great. However, when I am on holiday, I often use a proper camera with a bigger sensor and lens as it can produce better results. The disadvantage of this is that it does not have a GPS so cannot geotag the […]

Seven months

https://qwandor.wordpress.com/20...

I really have not blogged much in ages! A lot has happened since May. Other than Morocco, let’s see: A friends (Emily Swan) was in town for a few days in June, I caught up with her all too briefly for lunch. Wow, that seems so long ago. Briefly saw another friend (Jordan) around the […]

In reply to Sharon Wilkes. The locals were a mix to be honest: some really lovely helpful people, including Nour especially, and some (quite a few) trying to rip us off. But it was certainly a really interesting trip, I would recommend visiting Morocco.

Oh, and two more important notes! 1) Riding a camel is quite painful. My legs ached for some time afterwards. 2) We listened to Slice of Heaven several times in the car, and Joanna decided that it must be about a banana.

I planned to write this post straight after I got back, while everything was still fresh in my memory. Obviously that failed: it has now been over a month since I got back on the 4th of November. Anyway, Morocco! It was a great trip. I will see what I can remember. Photos are linked […]
