Taqueria Tepehuaje

https://phxrailfood.com/2025/03/...

Phoenix is known for its restaurant patios and outdoor dining. At many places, however, customers sit outside only half the year, understandably focusing on interior spaces from May until October. It takes a special kind of dedication to operate with outdoor dining as the only option all year along, but that’s not an uncommon setup […]

Toasted Owl Cafe

https://phxrailfood.com/2025/02/...

The popular online language learning platform Duolingo recently caused a stir with reports that its eponymous owl mascot Duo had perished after being hit by a Cybertruck. Whether this was just a publicity stunt or a bit of political satire directed towards the outsized role of Elon Musk in the federal government, the outpouring of […]

Harumi Sushi

https://phxrailfood.com/2025/02/...

Half a century ago, the groundbreaking Jeffersons show opened with a theme song describing how the Black neighbors of notorious bigot Archie Bunker found success and were “movin’ on up to the east side, to a deluxe apartment in the sky.” For one sushi restaurant in downtown Phoenix, the movin’ on up has been to […]

There is one type of development that nearly vanished in the United States, despite being a vital component of urban vitality. It’s the idea of live-work space, often two-story structures in which a small business owner can live upstairs and run a shop or office below. As mixed use has made a slow comeback in […]

Cornish Pasty Company

https://phxrailfood.com/2025/01/...

Many culinary traditions from around the world incorporate the idea of handheld food. For most Americans, a hamburger or a burrito are common choices that provide a filling meal while remaining portable and easily consumed while multitasking. In the mining towns of southwestern England, there’s a tradition of a handheld food known as a pasty, […]

Tesota

https://phxrailfood.com/2025/01/...

It has now been a decade since the Newton, a small complex of several retail tenants, opened at the site of the old Beefeater’s location in Uptown Phoenix. Named for Jay Newton, the owner of the legendary steakhouse, the vintage building had fallen into disrepair before its restoration and reopening. After ten years, some turnover […]

Le Taco

People of a certain age may have grown up with vinyl records that were later traded in for compact discs followed by MP3 downloads and eventually streaming services. What happened to all those albums, though? Some were lovingly maintained by collectors, and others have been reissued as a sort of record resurgence. That doesn’t mean […]

Terra Tempe

https://phxrailfood.com/2025/01/...

Until recently, a mention of the Tempe skyline would have most likely provoked a reaction of “What skyline?” For nearly a century, the historic Hayden Flour Mill was the tallest structure in Tempe. Then, in the 1960s, Arizona State University started building taller dormitories, including 15-story Manzanita Hall. Since around 2010, Tempe has added 20 […]

Ever since the summer 2023 release of the movie Barbie, there seems to have been a renewed interest in the color pink, particularly Pantone 219 C, the vivid version associated with the doll and her world. Pinks of all sorts have become a more prominent design element in everything from water bottles to restaurant decor. […]

Aroma India

https://phxrailfood.com/2024/12/...

One of the uglier moments of the 2024 Presidential campaign was a claim by conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer that if Kamala Harris were elected,  “the White House will smell like curry.” Questioned about that racist remark, JD Vance claimed that he “make[s] a mean chicken curry.” As repugnant as the whole discussion was, it seemed […]

Cartel Roasting Co.

https://phxrailfood.com/2024/12/...

Observers of coffee culture often speak in terms of waves. The current wave, one that has been crashing over our cities since the ‘90s, is the third one, characterized by single origin beans and manual brewing. Regardless of what trends dominate worldwide, one local coffee house has been making its own waves for over a […]

Sake Haus

https://phxrailfood.com/2024/11/...

In restaurants, as with many other endeavors, small locations can sometimes breed creativity. It can be all too easy for a restaurant with expansive square footage to try to do everything at once, saddling itself with an overly broad menu and unfocused approach. A shoebox space, on the other hand, can lead to a decision […]

Comment on Mifan by Harrison Hamada

Great place! Highly recommend. Great traditional clay pot rice, a dish that warms your heart. My favorite! and some great creative Chinese and fusion dishes. It is especially great it is so close to the art museum. Make it a two-fer. Parking is a little hard to find the first time, but easy the next times. The only downside is that if you want to park there, you have to remember to enter from the east on McDowell. The restaurant is in the mixed use area on the north side. Say hi to Johnny for me!

The original Gus's in Mason, Tenn. was around for many years before they started to franchise out. As Memphians, we are no strangers to barbecue or fried anything. Occasionally, we'd make the 35 mile trip up to Mason to try out the famous Bozo's Bar-B-Q. They were closed first time I went, but we stumbled onto Gus's Fried Chicken down the street. Incredible food. Nicely seasoned, and they fry it in a skillet - not deep fried.
