19.8.2024 09:19Comment on what plant is that? by AnonymousIn reply to Anonymous.
I recommend a grape vine for every pergola! With growing the vine on metal roofing, if you have high summer temps where you are, the vine may struggle with the heat of the metal. I haven't heard of solar shield, so I don't know what its made of, but consider how much it will increase temperature for the plant.

I'm in Perth and my vines struggle in our heat waves, which are becoming more prevalent. The tile roof of my neighbour's house increases the localised temperatures around the pergola. In the past 3 summers the vines lose a lot of leaves during heatwaves and don't provide as much shade as I hoped. I'm thinking of planting a really vigorous vine like star jasmine to increase shade to protect the grape vines.

Local vineyards are also struggling with more summer heatwaves. The main solution is to plant varieties that are bred to withstand higher temperatures. So look at the variety when choosing the vine to plant.

Good luck with your grape growing

Hi there,

Thanks for sharing this article about your grape pergola. I'm currently mulling over some ideas for our NW facing verandah/lean-to. It's currently covered in colourbond so is very dark beneath in Winter. I'd love to grow grapes over it but I'm hesitant to lose the sheet roofing (perhaps I'll swap it for solar shield instead) as I don't want to lose its waterproofing function in the colder months. Wondering if I could somehow install a trellis on top of the solar shield I shall continue mulling...
