I still haven't seen The Iron Rose, but I remember that clowns also show up in Rollin's Requiem for a Vampire, which I saw several years back in the Something Weird Video version titled Caged Virgins. At the time, it struck me as basically an idiosyncratic exploitation film, but when I later saw Rollin's The Grapes of Death, I had more of a sense of an intellect and a sense of allegory behind it. The only other one of his films I've seen is The Night of the Hunted, the premise of which again seems like an excuse to show a lot of nudity, but as you demonstrate here there's a case to be made for a lot going on underneath the surface of his work.

16.2.2025 21:28Comment on THE IRON ROSE (1973) A Cryptic Tale of a Tryst in a Crypt by icareviewsThe director of this film, Alain Resnais, stated that it was a break from the politically engaged themes of his previous work: I was making this film at a time when I think, rightly, one could not make a film, in France, without speaking about the Algerian War. Indeed I wonder whether the closed and […]
18.12.2024 11:55LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD (1961) Only DisconnectLike many people I always assumed Jean Rollin to be a purveyor of softcore sexploitation films usually involving lesbian vampires, terrible acting, and absurd dialogue. Fascination (1979) and Shiver of the Vampires (1970) are the only other works I had seen before this one and that assumption seemed to be generally correct with some reservations. […]

17.10.2024 19:22Comment on The Blackcoat’s Daughter (2015) Resounding Horror by TonyI’ve never paid much attention to the soundtracks on horror movies but in this one by Oz Perkins there’s a very unusual sonic landscape which underscores the off-kilter feel of the visuals. In some ways it reminds me of first hearing Swordfish Trombone (1983) by Tom Waits, which marked a radical shift away from his […]
16.10.2024 19:27The Blackcoat’s Daughter (2015) Resounding HorrorThere are many breakdowns of Kubrick’s 1999 film Eyes Wide Shut but the original source novella Traumnovelle (1926) by Arthur Schnitzler is usually only briefly referenced and very rarely examined. The film version by Wolfgang Gluck from 1969 Traumnovelle (Dream Story) is presently available on Youtube and the novella (Rhapsody-A Dream Novel) is also freely […]
17.9.2024 13:11TRAUMNOVELLE (1969) Inside the OutsiderThis is a well-crafted but very low-key horror film directed by Osgood Perkins that dwells on various forms of absence. Although not as haunting or disturbing as his previous work The Blackcoat’s Daughter (2015), it is far more intricately designed and ruminative. It is also a metafictional work which engages in a meditation upon the […]
10.6.2024 21:12I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House (2016) Beauty in DecayAfter watching Poor Things (2023) by Yorgos Lanthimos I kept thinking about how much more memorable and impactful this earlier work was despite being produced with only a fraction of the budget of the newer piece. Dogtooth seems to divide opinion into those who see it as pretentious avant-garde ‘dogshit’ or those who see it […]
30.5.2024 14:13DOGTOOTH (2009) Jaw-Dropping SatireThe recent paralysed impotence of both Conservative and Labour politicians in reaction to the events occurring in Gaza has led to disturbing questions about the nature of the ruling class which makes this film from 1963 oddly more relevant. There are two aspects of this work which need to be taken into account in any […]
28.3.2024 18:12THE SERVANT (1963) Masterclass in DecompositionThis was the film that influenced Angela Carter’s short story The Company of Wolves from her collection of updated fairy-tales: The Bloody Chamber. The 1984 Neil Jordan film version has little comparison but if anything can come close to the spirit of this work it would be Angela Carter’s prose style. In an interview she […]
29.2.2024 11:11VALERIE AND HER WEEK OF WONDERS (1970) Spring RetreatHaving found The Ring to be a terrific combination of story and image I was keen to watch another collaboration between Gore Verbinski and Bojan Bezelli. This was made some time later and although it had the potential to be just as compelling and thought-provoking it opted for an injection of cinematic soma dispensed via […]
15.2.2024 09:58A CURE FOR WELLNESS (2017) Damaged BeautyAs humanity progresses its technology on a global level, the observed degradation of natural processes and growth cycles are the alarm systems that nature uses to alert us that some of this progress is biologically toxic.― Steven Magee I recently encountered a fascinating take on this film by a substack writer where the nature of analog […]
