Comment on Why is eating healthy so difficult by Anita

In reply to miteigenenhaenden. That's so true, people need to learn to cook from scratch. I also grew up on home grown home made foods. In the 50s and 60s I became persuaded by movie stars and animated animals in commercials to go with tv dinners and fast foods. In the 70s the oil embargo had people, and me, turning to lower cost carb heavy foods which were cheaper. Several pounds and a few years later I've slowly been going back to the old ways I remember. I honestly believed I was doing ok until I had a heart attack. I'm more determined than ever to regain my health.

I think it's difficult to eat healthily when you've been eating industrial food for decades. Home-cooked food tastes different to what you're used to from industrial food and many people have to really learn to cook from scratch and without any ready-made sauces or other "magic ingredients".That can be really difficult.I'm very lucky to have grown up without any industrial food. I know the craft and I know the taste. That's a real treasure that I can only appreciate now that I'm older.Hang in there. You can do it!

In reply to miteigenenhaenden. Thanks Sibylle. I also date the front of things in large numbers so it's easier to see and read. For things without a date I use the date one year from the day I put it into storage. I'm finding more and more canned foods without dates making it difficult to know just how old it really is. Hugs, Anita

I'm only burning about 100 calories per session but it's a start. I've spent years setting in a chair sewing so it's gonna take a while to reverse that.

The veggie meal you plan sounds delish. As an aside, I do some weight training & walk 4 miles a day. I lost an earring last week & spent 2 hours raking leaves & on my knees sifting thru grass. That night I ached all over. My back, shoulders, etc. I found the earring! Hang in there at the rehab gym.

It's great that you're slowly finding your way with your training. I'm sure it will do you good.I think the idea of writing the date on things when you've started using them is great. I think I'll do that soon too. So far I've always written the expiration date in large letters on the packages so that nothing goes bad. But your idea is better for getting an overview of how much is being used. Best wishes from Germany, Sibylle

In reply to kaythegardener. My check went into my account last night too. Thank you for reminding us Kay. I haven't been watching the news while I concentrate on cardiac rehab. I wasn't paying attention to the March 14 debt ceiling being so close. One of the followers has gifted me money for groceries. I planned to use it after seeing the dietitian next week. I'll go pull that out just in case. I mailed my monthly payments already so maybe they'll reach the places before the 14th. I'm not worried about anything except my mortgage. I can survive anything as long as I have a roof over my head.

Dear all,

Just reporting that my March Social Security check hit my credit union account last night. The money will be available on the 3rd as usual. However, due to a merger, my credit union accounts will open on Tuesday. Only the debit or credit cards for this account will work over the weekend!!

Don't know what will happen to US Treasury checks when the debt ceiling kicks in on 14 March. Certain types of checks were sent automatically during past freezes, but who knows this time?? Better to watch your accounts carefully & freeze your cards if you are worried about the security of your private & financial info.

Who would have thought that retired seniors would be doing this in the "golden years of our lives"??

Especially the last one. I remind my daughter all the time that instant gratifications always hurts but a delayed thoughtful decision works every time. Hugs, stay steady.

I'm in a 12-step program, and I use some of the best known slogans to keep me on track: one day at a time, first things first, next right thing, time takes time. I love reading your blog and I understand how one thing can knock something else off track. The author of The First Wives Club and another one of her books wrote something that I found to be incredibly true has a human being

"The immediate will overwhelm the necessary".
