Pretty depressing recount of class hierarchy an its effects. It’s a story of loss, lostness and imaginary success. Worth reading.
7.2.2025 17:15Aravind Adiga: The White TigerThis is a must read for everyone, and yeah, again, I know, those who should read it, never will. (Which makes it a good present :)) I like everything about this book. The writing is plain art and leaves me wondering how the authors brain, or say, process works to produce such beauty. It’s filigree,… Continue reading Mareike Fallwickl: Und alle so still
15.8.2024 12:06Mareike Fallwickl: Und alle so stillPiece of art. I love everything about it. The protagonists are crisp, the writing style changes whenever focus on an individual changes. The writing is so much on point, it’s difficult to grasp how so much poetry could be weaved into it. The story in itself is an exceptional recount of (at least in my… Continue reading Fatma Aydemir: Dschinns
15.8.2024 11:52Fatma Aydemir: DschinnsExceptionally bad book. Not only the misogynistic approach to the protagonists and how they interact, but also the illogical structure, make it a pain to read. Clearly the author didn’t think this through and forfaited everything this book could have been in favor of shipping something in tune with the zeitgeist for a quick buck… Continue reading Charles Lewinsky: Der Wille des Volkes
15.8.2024 11:42Charles Lewinsky: Der Wille des VolkesAssuming the translation (to german) is on point: didn’t really like the book. Sentences feel disconnected, threads change constantly for no apparent reason (neither stylistic nor content wise). Could be a language thing, where Korean doesn’t translate well into something as rough as German 🙂
22.5.2024 15:36Cho Nam-Joo: Miss Kim Knows and Other Storieshttps://www.bayard-editions.com/livres/1764-35-kilos-despoir Worthwhile book to read for everyone in the childrens education realm. Wonderful example of diversity power.
22.5.2024 15:30Anna Gavalda: 35kg d’espoirone of the books I just can’t finish. Full of self-centricity, misogyny and disrespect for… well, basically everything. It’s fascinating how in 1991 authors were able to publish books like this to acclaim. (and if you now consider reading it, streisand effect and all: don’t)
18.3.2024 05:07Bill Bryson: Neither Here nor There: Travels in Europehttps://www.ledilettante.com/product/je-voudrais-que-quelquun-mattende-quelque-part/ Absolute piece of art. Absolutely worth reading. I’ve read it in french, and can’t fathom it being anywhere near as good in any translation, but ymmv.
22.2.2024 05:22Anna Gavalda: Je voudrais que quelqu’un m’attende quelque partFun book, easy read (in french), also a bit of a marketing machine for Monsieur Lelord’s business 🙂 https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Voyage_d%27Hector_ou_la_Recherche_du_bonheur
29.1.2024 15:03François Lelord: Le Voyage d’Hector ou la Recherche du bonheurjust a really wonderful short novel, absolutely worth the time reading it (also: loved the movie, but after reading the book, the movie (as always) doesn’t do it justice at all). https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monsieur_Ibrahim_et_les_Fleurs_du_Coran
Continue reading Monika Dettwiler: Berner Lauffeuer
8.1.2024 16:34Monika Dettwiler: Berner Lauffeuerhttps://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Deuxi%C3%A8me_Sexe must read. Challenging writing style, fascinating thoughts, extremely relevant. Interestingly it’s truly philosophical, in as far as that “data” is pulled from literature, less so from science (doesn’t make it worse, it’s just an interesting observation). Could probably be cut to 1/3, but the expansive thinking I as a reader was able to observe… Continue reading Simone de Beauvoir: Le Deuxième Sexe
