My project for 2025 is an exploration of the shifting sands of Westward Ho! beach. Here are the current candidates and will be updated throughout the year as the project progresses.

13.3.2025 06:29Comment on Sunrise on the Pebble Ridge by James Moore
Very nice, James! I’ve spent a long time working with HDR myself. If I may suggest a little experiment—try taking a well-exposed RAW photo, develop it as you normally would, and then save multiple versions with adjusted exposure in your software (just as you would bracket in-camera, but digitally). Save them all in TIFF format and then merge them as you would with any other HDR.

I picked up this technique a long time ago from Trey Ratcliff, an HDR specialist, and others—it has given me some great results.

Have a great day, James!

13.3.2025 06:21Comment on Sunrise on the Pebble Ridge by BushcrafterThis morning sunrise was at high tide so I couldn’t get down on to the beach for my Sandscapes project. So instead I went for a classic image of the groynes and pebble ridge. A bright sky combined with a foreground in shadow meant that I needed to bracket the exposure and then use HDR […]

An early winter morning in the Northam Burrows nature reserve gives the opportunity to photograph the light before dawn. In the distance the ancient maritime town of Appledore and in the foreground the salt marshes of grey sands.

22.11.2024 07:35Comment on Snow! by James Moore
Snow can indeed be a tricky subject to photograph, but I must say, I really like your results! That last shot at the forest entrance, with the white trees in the background, is simply stunning. Great work! Best regards,
Marc

22.11.2024 04:54Comment on Snow! by James MooreThe woods are so beautiful. I just love to touch them and feel how nature is so kind to me.
22.11.2024 04:50Comment on Snow! by Hazel BagarinaoLiving on the coast in the south west of England, snow is very rare. Yesterday it was raining at home but just 10 miles away at one of my favourite woodlands it was a different story. My lack of experience shooting in snowy conditions showed through and I messed up a lot. But some came […]
22.11.2024 04:16Snow![…] out because the past few days had been dark, rainy, and frankly quite depressing. But then I read James Moore’s latest article. He had ventured out in similarly miserable weather in North Devon, and his story […]
18.11.2024 05:51Comment on Capturing North Devon’s November Colours with Fujifilm Velvia by SG-Image Ultra Wide 12mm f2.8 L mount – Unbox, First Use and Review – Open...In reply to Bushcrafter. Thanks Marc, I look forward to seeing the results.
17.11.2024 13:53Comment on Capturing North Devon’s November Colours with Fujifilm Velvia by James MooreA late November day in North Devon and the skies were threatening rain. The sun was hiding away like all sensible beings on a day like this. The only people out and about were photographers and dog walkers. I went in search of some colour in the plantations at Powler’s Piece and wasn’t disappointed. These […]
17.11.2024 10:38Capturing North Devon’s November Colours with Fujifilm VelviaLike many others I have recently started using BlueSky for social media and deactivated my twitter account. As part of this transition I have decided to make a concerted effort to add alt-text to my photographs when posting them. Alt-text is a brief description of the image that is used by screen readers for visually […]
16.11.2024 07:29Enhancing Accessibility with Effective Alt-TextToday’s photography adventure involved cycling from Barnstaple to Bideford along the Tarka Trail cycle path. A chilly day but very little wind so it was a pleasant ride. About half way my Olympus Tough TG-6 Camera decided to leap out of my pocket and test its robustness by bouncing off the tarmac and into the […]
14.11.2024 11:08Bouncing a Camera on the Tarka TrailThe sky was grey and overcast. The light was flat and dull. Where better to go for photography than back into the woods at Powler’s Piece. A change of lenses this time just to challenge myself a little more. The Fuji 16mm F1.4 for close ups with context. The Fuji 27mm F2.8 for a standard […]
2.11.2024 14:03More Fungi at Powler’s PieceAll hallows eve! The clocks went back an hour this past weekend. I am slow to adjust to clock changes. Which is strange given that at the end of my career I traveled extensively across eastern Europe, USA & Canada. I was awake well before dawn. Plenty of time for a breakfast of porridge oats […]
31.10.2024 15:49Chasing the Cobwebs on HalloweenI have the jolly little Olympus Tough TG-6 as my pocket walk around camera. It sports a cheerful red colour and is fully waterproof. Great news for the current wet weather we are experiencing. The TG-6 has some interesting night photography modes which I haven’t fully explored. This morning I had a play with the […]
