I do not recommend reading this if you are staying away from discussions about the takeover of America for your own self care.
It has been a very tough few weeks and months. I can only imagine what others have been going through, and I ache for them.
I am ashamed of what America is doing right now. Back in November I was devastated by the election results, but even more devastated that so many people supported that result with their vote. It is no secret that the President is a deeply cruel and terrible person, and the people who voted for him share those same beliefs. Those that claim to have voted for "innocuous" reasons actively made room for the cruelty to be unleashed upon their fellow humans across the world. The candidate did not hide the full range of his motives and plans; ignorance is not an excuse.
There is a big part of me that was in a fog of denial and hiding. Hoping my fears were somehow wrong while still knowing deep down that is not the case.
I see the coup that is currently taking place and it just adds to the despair and the feeling of being powerless. Even if this reign of terror somehow ends it will still take decades to a century to rebuild everything that was tossed away in a matter of days and weeks. It is hard to hold out hope in the face of this destruction. I want to run away to a country where the citizens are less cruel and embrace even some of the ideals that I hold close.
Nearly smothered by all of this despair is still a glimmer of hope, fire, and fight. The hope is not for this disgraceful country, which is wholly uninspiring. The fight and hope exists for the other people, both in this country and across the world, who are honest, kind, and caring. As of right now I do not know what to do, but I will find out and continue to fight. Writing this down as a first step helps a little.
I support all LGBTQ+ people and causes. I support DEI. I support all minorities and people of color. I support the liberal consensus and the idea that the role of government is to improve the live of all citizens. I support the fight for progressive causes. I will fight against fascism.
