I used to think of approaching a politician and elected officials like I was going to go speak to the manager, with hesitation. I’ve reassessed this approach: in a democracy, they should act much more as employees. I need to have a word about the subpar work performance of my employees, and put them on a performance improvement plan. You do too. Contact them today and let them know their job performance is unacceptable and there will be cuts in their department if they don’t turn things around immediately.

Lessons I Would Teach My Child Self: Be Yourself

When we open our souls and show another or the world who we are, we hope for acceptance, but we can’t expect it. We are part of a world that judges, and it is often unfair. We don’t change who we are because of someone; we stay who we are despite them. Changing ourselves to be accepted is not worth it. If someone can’t love you for who you are, they don’t deserve to love you. That’s their problem, not yours.

Fear and Loss

Fear is the muddy anticipation of loss. Yet, something profound happens when we come to terms with and accept that loss is an inherent part of our journey. We begin to understand the value of ourselves, our life, and our time. When we understand that we can control nothing but our choices, our outlook is unburdened, and we remain standing. Fear loses its power over our spirit, and courage glows brightly because there are no longer any unknowns left for us to fear.

Shackled

I know first hand the consequences of being dominated by humans. To be told how to feel, think and act. Humans often have a desire to dominate; it is predatory, persistent, and insidious. Why pursue domination? It is one of the most fundamental questions that will never provide a positive answer, as any justification for it can be replaced with cooperation.

The only reason to choose domination over cooperation is if one chooses selfishness. Cooperation is what allows humans to advance, while domination provides a veneer of advancement. In reality, it is built upon animalistic tendencies and ideals. The hope of this human species surviving does not include domination.

What I hope is that those who have made sacrifices for our country remember that their past and present contributions will still bring benefits and affect the world for years to come. Their support allowed perhaps the most important concepts and ideology to flourish and become firmly established in my heart and in the hearts of millions of others.

We have tasted freedom because of their sacrifice, and it is something that I will remember, desire, and promote for the rest of my life. Once given the wings of freedom, a human never forgets how to fly. They can never be shackled in spirit.

I Will Always Have Room in My Heart to Love You

I thought I had no love left in my heart to grieve for those who do not love me in return. I had committed to reserving my grief for those who did so. Yet, you proved me wrong in my understanding because you stopped loving me, but I chose to grieve your departure with love, not hate. I misunderstood what love was and subsequently grief as well.

I understand now that my grief is the endurance my love has for you, not yours for me. And while I could choose to view you as a monster because of how you acted towards me, I refuse.

Instead, I thank you for teaching me up until the very end, not only this lesson regarding my ability to love without reciprocation, but for providing me with a map that I will use again as my own parents age. If it wasn’t for you, I would be less complete and less prepared for future life experiences.

Thank you for loving me when you did, and for showing me the beauty you were capable of, because it has taught me that I am capable of loving without anything to look for in return. I wish you peace, and I hope that includes finding and spending eternity with Grandpa.

By creating a disposable iMessage alias and disabling unknown FaceTime calls, you can keep your contact information accessible while maintaining clear boundaries. :)
