Our highlights tour of Punta Arenas, Chile, included a visit to the cemetery, rated as one of the ten most beautiful in the world by CNN only a few years before our visit in 2016. The area of land was donated by Sara Braun, a leading businesswoman in the region in the late 19th and early 20th century, and her body along with those of many rich families are located in the cemetery.

Ushuaia was the last Argentinian port on our 2016 cruise aboard Star Princess and the next day we arrived in the first Chilean stop, Punta Arenas. As is typical for us whenever we're somewhere new we headed off for an excursion first to see some highlights and get some local information from the guide. Our first stop was at the Museo Del Recuerdo (the Remembrance Museum), an open air museum in which were gathered vintage equipment (wagons, movie-making, farming, cars, etc.) and old buildings from the city and region that had been relocated to this spot.

After several hours on a boat in the Beagle Channel we returned to Ushuaia for a walk around. Stunning scenery surrounded it but the city itself is fairly small and we mostly looked for street art and souvenirs. We did encounter a protest march at one point because that's an Argentinian national pastime, and one of our fellow cruise passengers even joined in, helping to stoke braziers and hold up flags. Probably not the most sensible thing to do as a foreign tourist to be fair, but he had fun and a good memory of his trip.
We headed back to the cruise ship with the expectation of a fabulous sail away from Ushuaia to look forward to but the wind speed and force kept our ship pinned to the dock until the early hours of the morning.

We took an excursion while in Ushuaia that saw us hop on a boat and head down the Beagle Channel for around three hours. During this time we were treated to majestic views of the surrounding landscapes - particularly the impressive Martial Mountains - and got up to a sea lion colony, getting as far as the Les Eclaireurs lighthouse before heading back. It was bitterly cold but beautiful.

We had another sea day after the Falklands during which we cruised out and around the southernmost part of Cape Horn, a very grey and rainy day sadly devoid of the fierce seas we'd been looking forward to. The following day brought us to the Argentinian port of Ushuaia. It remains to this day the most awe-inspiring view to wake up to we've experienced, with a ring of jagged mountains shadowing the small city and everything brightening up slowly as the sun rose, bringing more and more detail to the incredible, natural surroundings.

After our tour of the battlefields we had plenty of time left to explore Stanley and we made use of this with a bit of a walk and admiration of the brightly-coloured roofs, a visit to the museum, some souvenir-purchasing, then a drink in a pub busy with tourists not just from our ship but also from Argentina.

We had another sea day after visiting the penguins at the nature reserve in Argentina's Punta Tombo and then we arrived at the Falkland Islands. We'd been warned beforehand that getting off the ship at the Falklands wasn't always possible because of the weather conditions but we were lucky enough to arrive on a gloriously sunny day.
After tendering ashore we headed off on an excursion of several hours visiting the battlefield locations from the 1982 Falklands War. Being from Portsmouth we both had memories of being in the crowds when the task force left and returned to the city, and a friend's dad served on HMS Hermes at the time.
The tour had several stops for photos and chats about battles, military attitudes, and anecdotes from our sarcastic guide (most of which went over the heads of the Americans on the tour) and we visited Estancia, Mount Kent, and Mount Harriet.

After Uruguay we had a sea day on Star Princess heading south along Argentina's coast before docking at Puerto Madryn. We took an excursion that involved a two-hour bus ride through Patagonia - which was incredibly, incredibly dull - before arriving at the Punta Tombo nature reserve. Here we saw hundreds of Magellanic Penguins in the wild with plenty of chicks still retaining some of the soft brown feathers of youth, and it's where we learned that the sound of a penguin shouting is indistinguishable from that of a donkey braying. We were also fortunate enough to spot guanacos in the area which with vicuñas are the only wild species of camelid in South America, the llamas and alpacas being domesticated.

The main purpose of our excursion while in Uruguay in 2016 was to visit the Juanicó winery and partake in a wine-tasting. We'd reached here by steam train (see last post) and had a walk around the vineyard and cellars first, then were treated to the wine-tasting itself with some lunch.
The wine-tasting was the booziest one we've ever had. Picture five glasses for five wines. A little in glass A from the people moving table-to-table, then a little in glass B, then being asked if we liked A and wanted more so getting glass A filled to the top, then a little in glass C, then B being filled up, then a little in D, then more A and filled-up C, and we sort of lost track after that. We *think* we drank two bottles per person.
After the wine-tasting we were treated to some Uruguayan Tango, and it was fabulous. After that, though, "volunteers" were requested from the visitors to dance with the pair pictured and that's how I then ended up dancing with the woman here. Well, "dancing" to be more accurate.

Our excursion in Uruguay next took us on a restored vintage steam train ride from Montevideo to Juanicó around 20 kilometres to the north of the capital. It was fascinating to get out from the capital city and pass through the suburbs then countryside area, and the steam train itself had to run infrequently enough that it was a big draw for the locals who would all come out of their houses along the way to watch us pass by.
