Garlic cress (Peltaria alliacea) is like a more refined version of its sister species Garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata). It is also reliably perennial and -which is rare for Brassicacea plant - spreads through rhizomes. I think it's a winner. Surprisingly, you almost can't find it on the market. And the few that sell it basically sell the same clone - so it won't set seed. After some years of working on this I finally did it and now have plants that set seed. The source of many of my plant dreams these days are these apple seedlings. I got the seed from the inspiring Californian small-scale apple breeder Steven Edholm. Each container is either an open pollinated mix of summer, fall, winter apples or specific styles of apples like savory or red-fleshed apples. There's a few specific crosses, esp. of red-fleshed and highly aromatic apple varieties - some of them that are Edholm's own creations. I've grafted several of his new releases this year like BITE ME!, Amberwine, Black Strawberry, Cherub, Cherry Crush and Tomboy and plan on doing my own crosses too this year. Looking forward in anticipation to taste the fruits.

Yet another year of moving about 40 fruit trees in a little car and planting them out in our collective house in the woods. I love bare root trees. I can lift lots of 2 meter high trees in one go as a single person. Potting culture is not only unsustainable and gives bad establishment in the landscape, it's also unnecessarily tedious and hard work. Stop the potting madness. Go bare root! #BareRoot #PlantingTrees

Grafting the old school way with rubber bands and cling film. Forgot my buddy tape, which is way easier and faster. Nice to know other materials will still work. Cambium just needs to meet, the scion doesn't dry out or get loose. Then it will be fine.#grafting #plantnursery #MakingTrees

Caucasian spinach (Hablitzia) uprooted and washed. You can see the tiny shoot buds at the base. That tells you how the plant manages to make a new flush of shoots when you eat the first. At this stage and for the next month or so, depending on location of the plant, they are really delicious spring green. We're entering the time of year when our annual food system is the most poor (hungry gap) and the perennial greens are the most lush. Harvesting American ground nut (Apios Americana). Tried microwaving one like potatoes and other root crops. Which most of the time works perfectly. I can tell you this doesn't work. Not enough water content. Nut starts turning into coal after 4-5 minutes. #ApiosAmericana #Microwave

When you're running a punk plant nursery and you're growing it in 3-4 different places on the mercy of someone else (thank you) and getting to 5-6 hundred grafted trees a year sometimes mean you need to transport root stock of Cornus mas in the metro. #PlantNursery #GardeningRenaissance
