Shining a Light on Men’s Mental Health: Dismantling Stigma and Building Resilience

https://lewlyfe.com/2024/06/18/s...

In a world where strength and resilience are often synonymous with masculinity, the topic of men’s mental health has long been veiled in silence and stigma. From early on, boys are taught to bottle up their emotions, to “toughen up,” and to suppress vulnerabilities. This cultural conditioning leaves many men grappling with anxiety, depression, and […]

Comment on The Dynamics of Digital Activism: From Clicks to Concrete Change by Chloe Blackburn

https://lewlyfe.com/2024/04/22/t...

What an engaging post Lewis! I definitely don't think that changing profile pictures or specific challenges create legislative change directly, but they do facilitate the conversations amongst at least our close circles to get the ball rolling. They demonstrate support and create a societal culture of belonging around these important issues. Putting pressure on the people who can make the change, and I guess that's the whole point right?

Hi Lewis,

Great to read your blog and consider how videogames are a way of escaping the harsh reality of the real world they live in (Owen, 2016). I could see the attraction when I looked at the trailer for Eve Online. It’s this sophisticated space-themed world with advanced computer graphics, and I could imagine myself being part of this lawless frontier. De Zwart and Humphreys (2017) say this “massively multiplayer online game” (MMOG) has more than half a million subscribers – that’s a whole online community right there. The game has a unique player council, the Council of Stellar Management (CSM), which provides a communication channel between players and developers. It all sounds good in theory, but the “aggressive and piratical game play” that’s encouraged within the game has spilled over into real life, with a number of scams and scandals over the past few years, “including fraud, Ponzi schemes, corporate raiding and theft’ (de Zwart & Humphreys 2017). So much for an escape from reality!

Cheers Blanche

Your post delves into the social aspects of video gaming, touching on vulnerability, community, and inequality. Referencing Gabrielle Zevin's novel, you discuss how playing games can be an intimate act, especially for marginalised groups like female gamers. You also explore how gaming has evolved into a vast industry, with platforms like Twitch and YouTube being the most dominant ones. Very nice touch on mentioning Stampy, I never got into Minecraft growing up but many of my friends back in primary school watched his videos and I followed his Disney Infinity Let's Play series. I definitely agree with video games being an escape from the real-world, it was definitely an escape for me during the pandemic lockdowns and final years of high school.

Another great post, Lewis! It's been a pleasure following your posts throughout this unit!

Hi Lewis,

I enjoyed reading your post. I come from a game playing family and I am the central instigator. I think games are a great way to sharpen the mind, have fun, and bring us together. We play lots of cards, board games, etc. We’ve had almost every game console come through our home, but X-Box currently has pride of place.

I had no idea of the discrimination in gaming until our unit learnings on Gamergate which I found really shocking. It certainly provided greater appreciation for the video you posted, about what it’s like to be a female in the gaming world. Cheers! 😊

Reference

eugunedebs 2018, Anita Sarkeesian at TEDxWomen 2012. 24 November, viewed 29 August 2022, <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wKBdMu6dD4>.

Hi Lewis,

It was great collaborating with you on Presentation 2. Your insights really added depth to our discussion.

I appreciated how you highlighted Grace Tame's advocacy work both in your blog and in our team presentation, showing the impact of social media on driving societal change, especially regarding legislative changes affecting survivors of sexual assault. Very powerful.

Barack Obama's 2008 campaign exemplified how social media can be effectively used to engage with voters, setting a standard for future digital strategies.
