Another post over break! This one also comes from a student’s suggestion on how to use Weather data in the form of gridded NetCDFs. This is a common format of the weather data provided by NOAA. The data are set up as a time-stacked set of rasters or spacetime cubes. The downloads have multiple years’ […]
10.1.2025 20:07Gridded NetCDF Basics – You Can Model Climate change with ArcGIS!With many students graduating, I have had questions about how long will my ArcGIS Online account live and how can I move my work to another so I can keep a portfolio. Most schools only keep accounts open for a semester or two after graduation, and others right after graduation. So your best bet is […]
7.1.2025 02:00Moving your ArcGIS Online Content[…] After the presentation, I will post a link to the presentation here. The presentation uses some new techniques to improve the efficiency and data storage of my previous post Creating a 3D printed Trail Map for People who are Visually Impaired. […]

I will be presenting my work on creating a 3D Printed Map. I will be presenting on Wednesday, Jul 17, 8:30 AM – 9:30 AM PDT in the Marriott Grand Ballroom Salon 10. If you would like to attend […]
8.7.2024 14:00ESRIUC 2024 Presentation – A Novel Raster Approach for Creating Maps for the Visually Impaired (Updated 3D Map Printing)In reply to Dennis. Thanks, I was not aware of any .e00 raster files. I thought .e00 were only for coverages.

28.3.2024 15:13Comment on How to Convert an E00 by Dennis[…] Now you can start to select your fields to delete. Because there are so many I would recommend clicking Select All and then working backwards and unchecking what you need. I would also keep at least the GeoID_Data field and the census identifiers so you can go back and add data later. Also, if you are working with an area with census tracts in the water keep ALAND so you can filter them out (see part 1 on how to do that). […]
26.6.2023 20:16Comment on “Quick and Easy” Census Data in GIS – Part 1 by “Quick and Easy” Census Data in GIS – Part 2 – Justin's GIS BlogIn Part 1 we covered the basics of getting the census data and doing a simple join. Now in Part 2, we will work on making this data both more usable and accessible using the database design tools in ArcGIS Pro and also Publishing this data to ArcGIS Online for use in your own web […]
26.6.2023 20:16“Quick and Easy” Census Data in GIS – Part 2Census data is a great resource for any GIS project, but it can be very overwhelming, and using it can be tricky at times. The data are in many forms on the Census.gov website but I have found that using the TIGER/Line with Selected Demographic and Economic Data is by far the easiest method of […]

8.8.2022 17:25Comment on Using ArcGIS Online to Map Attendance by Joseph BeckerWith school starting back up, I wanted to share a workflow that can help administrators look at the chronic attendance issues. One thing that I have seen is when talking with different school administrators, at the individual school level, they do not know of GIS and that Esri provides many tools to them for free. […]
8.8.2022 16:00Using ArcGIS Online to Map AttendanceIt is that time of year when students are emailing in a panic saying that they found some GIS data but it is an E00 file and how do they get that into ArcGIS Pro. Based on ESRI’s page on the Tools that are not available in ArcGIS Pro, there is no E00 import option […]
29.4.2022 14:00How to Convert an E00I teach a lot of cartography courses, and one thing we talk about in them is how to make maps more accessible. For the most part, we are talking about making them colorblind-friendly (for example ColorBrewer). I felt that this is a gap that is in many cartography classes, so I thought about what new […]
13.4.2022 16:00Creating a 3D printed Trail Map for People who are Visually ImpairedI just saw that the NYS Redistricting Maps were rejected (https://www.whec.com/national/judge-rejects-new-yorks-redistricting-plan-orders-new-maps/6434302/?cat=10036). When I worked in local government I helped the board of elections in the redistricting process by providing training and getting the Census data into a GIS Project for them. With a lot of grassroots organizations out there trying to work with the process, […]

23.8.2020 11:59Comment on Creating an Orthomosaic and Digital Surface Model using an UAV and ArcGIS Pro by Hilliary Byram RianchoOne of my previous posts was how to use Open Drone Map to create products from a UAV collection. One thing that I learned last year at the ESRIUC was how to use the Orthomapper tools in ArcGIS Pro. Recently I had the opportunity to fly my Parrot Anafi and do a data collection over […]
