Question about how things work

https://my-place.social/display/...

!Friendica Developers

Question for understanding:
When I run this query, I see the following output:

select command, pid, count(*) as processes FROM workerqueue WHERE done = 0 and pid != 0 GROUP BY command ORDER BY processes
DESC;
+------------------------------------+--------+-----------+
| command | pid | processes |
+------------------------------------+--------+-----------+
| UpdateContact | 982072 | 5 |
| APDelivery | 895941 | 2 |
| ContactDiscovery | 895941 | 2 |
| ClearCache | 982947 | 1 |
| addon/bluesky/bluesky_feed.php | 944103 | 1 |
| UpdateScores | 983740 | 1 |
| ProcessQueue | 982642 | 1 |
| UpdateGServer | 981787 | 1 |
| ProcessUnprocessedEntries | 983726 | 1 |
| PullDirectory | 982495 | 1 |
| addon/bluesky/bluesky_timeline.php | 976074 | 1 |
+------------------------------------+--------+-----------+
11 rows in set (0.001 sec)

Are each of these pids one of the "parallel workers" that I configured? I configured quite a bit more than 10 of them. Does this mean I configured excessively many? And are the processes within the number of units of work I specified that can be fetched by each of the parallel workers? Or am I looking at something entirely different?

Thanks!

Can I simply rename the username in the userd table to allow it to be used again?

https://my-place.social/display/...

!Friendica Developers
I have someone who deleted their account on my server a while ago and regretted switching to a different instance and wants to return. But their username is now in the userd table and I assume this is the reason they are being told the name is not available.

Because I don't know all the table relationships, I don't want to just go in using an UPDATE statement and rename the username entry in userd to something else, so the name is available again without first checking with a developer.

Can I simply change the username in the userd table, so a name can be reused?

Thanks.

[Warning] Could not increase number of max_open_files to more than 32768 (request: 33239)

MariaDB has been such a problem. Next week I will begin using jemalloc, but I don't think it will help with my latest problem.

I had an outage. I saw this in syslog. I assume it caused the outage:
[Warning] Could not increase number of max_open_files to more than 32768 (request: 33239)

Has anyone else seen this? Any suggestions for a fix. I see information when I Google about this, but often the information is wrong or outdated, and so I wanted to check here first.

Yes, you can also say goodbye to Facebook Events!

https://my-place.social/display/...

Today, I brought up another server to help people leave the and join the . I created a server, my-group.events, which is a decentralized replacement for Events.

You can use Mobilizon to create and organize your own events via a group page. Using it, you can publish out events to members, allow for discussions, collaborate, and share resources. I presume, just like you would with Facebook Events, which I never used.

You can also search for events that you can add to your own agenda.

You can have different profiles for different "you". Like a professional profile and one for your personal life.

Each server federates with other Mobilizon servers via an opt-in mechanism. I wish federating were automatic, though. I'm not a fan of opt-in federation. An Admin has to request a connection to another Mobilizon server, and it has to approve. Then public events become shared between them when approved.

People on Mastodon can follow Mobilizon groups and see published information. I don't know how well it works with other Fediverse applications.

I have not done a thing yet with the server. I have no groups and no events. But, if you would like to try using it and let me know how it works for you, it would be great. If there is another Mobilizon server you'd like me to federate with, I'll be happy to request it so you can see their public events.

There are still things I need to do on the server next week, like set up database backups and monitoring. But, the server appears useable.

You can create an account by going to my-group.events and you can start organizing events!

If anyone knows more about Mobilizon, please add to the discussion.

Does anyone else have a problem trying to connect with @meldrik@lemmy.wtf?

I can follow the profile in Mastodon, but when I enter this user in the box to connect with them, I get a white screen, and I see this in the log

Interesting discussion in the "Threadiverse" about what we Admins can start doing to protect people on our servers from the ongoing political changes endangering our freedom, privacy, and security.

This is why people should use Fediverse social media and should leave corporate-owned social media, even those who are currently on seemingly non-threatening media like which will eventually become like the rest.

My server has been plagued with MariaDB being killed by the OOM Killer in Ubuntu once every week or so. Usually around 3 to 4 AM. It happened again this morning and there is very little in the logs except this from the OOM killer:

2025-02-04T03:33:15.467127-05:00 my-place kernel: CPU: 4 PID: 2664137 Comm: php Not tainted 6.8.0-52-generic

2025-02-04T03:33:15.582744-05:00 my-place kernel: [2664137] 33 2664137 3462986 3384852 3383828 1024 0 27414528 10368 0 php

Process PID 2664137 is a PHP process that is consuming an extraordinary 13GB (3384852 pages) and it's the one that invoked the OOM Killer, apparently wanting more memory, leading to MariaDB being killed.

Nothing else unusual was running. I have a database backup that starts at 3 AM, but it was completed well before this crash.

Any ideas as to what this process may have been doing and how to prevent this? Is this a problem that has been mentioned before?

Thanks.

Question before trying again to do the update

https://my-place.social/display/...

!Friendica Developers
I've never updated Friendica before. This Saturday I'm going to do it. So, a bit nervous.

Before doing the first "git pull", should I first do these two commands? I want to be sure I'm in the right place and that I'm not going to mess up the permissions.

cd /var/www/html
sudo -u www-data bash

Then do:

git pull
bin/composer.phar install --no-dev
cd addon
git pull

Thanks!
