In reply to Mark Griffin. Agreed Mark, the salary is not enticing but a large number of colleges particularly in the north west have changed and try their best to meet market forces. Yet it still seems to not be enough to attract and retain talent from the industry. I think that it is perhaps the expectation that is put onto new members of staff when they come into FE that puts people off, the back of house stuff that is required to meet safeguarding, quality control and many, many other things is a huge factor and that is why I believe in the induction and mentoring schemes are so important to enable retention of some fantastic talent that has been allowed to leave the profession so soon after joining. I honestly do not have the answers but I am concerned for the future if we do not find a solution. Are agencies the answer? To some gaps yes I suppose so but they are not the long term solution. In many sectors particularly in building services they are pricing themselves out of work as the colleges simply cannot afford the hourly rate required particularly with funding being so tight and not increasing any time soon.

While I believe the main sticking point is Salary , or at least. Initial salary Around 40k with the Hols and pension is great but this is not offered to recruit. As without teaching quals a units or cert Ed many colleges just offer around 30 which is not going to encourage engineers from industry it’s a massive hit even for a couple of years .
I throughly enjoyed my time in Fe but after some time you realise how funding is the main priority of the college bums on seats.
im sure they’re are some great Fe colleges and SLTs out there and I may have just been on the wrong end of a bad one. , but it is a rewarding job. And that’s why I continue to try and help out with Training as and when my company will let me attend
