This is a curious lens. It’s not the right lens for every purpose, however, I believe it is perfect for a few things. The main attributes that interest me are the 500mm reach, and the […]
10.8.2024 19:11Digital Lens Review: Canon EOS RF 100-500mm L IS f/4.5-7.1Since I have an interest in medium format cameras, and have always been drawn to folders, the Mamiya Six was one of the cameras I was anxious to try. The Mamiya Six was made in […]

I should have posted this link (https://camerapedia.fandom.com/wiki/Radioactive_lenses). It is pretty good, but their list is not exhaustive. This is an inexpensive detector that works, but is a bit slow (takes about 10 seconds to respond to radiation - better ones have a wider range of detection and faster detection) but it works: https://a.co/d/ad4T1R6

It's probably similar to watches. Watches used to have radium-infused luminescent paint on the hands and face for low-light readability. The radium probably wouldn't affect the watch wearer, but it did affect those applying the paint, mostly women, who would commonly use their lips/mouth to "point" the brushes. That radium then got in their system, and many died from cancer. They phased out radium for watches. Most now will have non-radioactive photoluminescence pigments that need to be exposed to light for them to glow. Not as good as radium, but nowhere near as dangerous.

That is interesting. I wonder if any of my pre-80s lenses are radioactive. I'm not overly concerned about it, to be honest; but I'm curious.

Prior to the 1980's, camera makers used Thorium Oxide frequently in high end lens glass - since Thorium increases the quality of the glass - higher transmission of light, and other advantages. I've read a lot about them, and by most accounts not high enough levels of radiation to harm photographers - and I think I've read that NASA and other still use Thorium in optics - but I also heard lens makers don't use it because it could be risk to those grinding the glass and making the lenses - since they're around it so often, and also have a risk of inhalation of dust from the glass... Interesting to research it.

25.4.2024 01:53Comment on Vintage Lens: Nikkor 35mm f/1.4 by mattMy quest for experimenting with radioactive lenses has led me to test this Nikkor 35mm lens. I liked this lens right off the bat because it’s a great all-around lens. 35mm is a focal length […]

I tend to think that way too; however, I have an EF 300 f/2.8 L that's just razor sharp at 3.5. For the stuff like what you're talking about, if I'm really interested, I see if Dustin Abbott has reviewed it. He does all the 'bore and stroke' sort of testing.

And, the ketchup was/is great! My wife's father worked for Heinz many years ago - so I'm not allowed to have or prefer any other kind.
21.4.2024 18:13Comment on Vintage Lens: Nikkor 55mm f/1.2 AI by Vince CurlettaI was interested in comparing this Nikkor to a more modern lens – and the only modern-ish lens I have is the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L, so I thought I’d compare the two. First, this […]
21.4.2024 16:10Vintage Lens: Nikkor 55mm f/1.2 AII’ve been intrigued by this lens ever since I read about it. First, it has a special, concave front element which is very rare in camera lenses. Second, it’s radioactive because of Thorium Dioxide used […]
