Offenbar kann ich mit meiner üblichen Handhaltung nicht schneller als 9 Klicks pro Sekunde klicken. Und selbst die waren schon arg verkrampft. Unverkrampftes Maximum liegt bei 7.

Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, oder vielmehr sie nicht mit anderen Dingen verplempern würde, kämen hier möglicherweise öfter Rants wie der folgende, aber vielleicht ist es auch besser, dass das nicht der Fall ist.

Die Deutsche Bahn hat in den letzten Jahren ihre Website und ihre Apps durchaus verbessert. An manchen Stellen blitzt aber noch immer die alte Zeit durch. Da wird für Verbindungen folgende Meldung ausgegeben.

Abgesehen davon, dass ich mit der Formulierung »zur Stabilisierung des Zugbetriebs« nicht viel anfangen kann, wird hier für die detaillierten Informationen auf eine andere Website mitsamt URL verwiesen, diese aber nicht verlinkt. Da wäre sogar der Klassiker »Mehr Informationen finden Sie hier« besser gewesen.

Teil 2: Design by Excel?

Nachdem ich die nicht verlinkte URL selbstständig aufgerufen habe (ein Hoch auf PopClip), muss ich danach die erwarteten Details selbst suchen, weil auf der Seite sämtliche NRW betreffende Meldungen aufgelistet werden. Vermutlich wäre bei einem konkreten Deeplink zum korrekten PDF die Problematik der Nicht-Verlinkung noch stärker aufgefallen. Es muss also die Suche bemüht werden, um die Meldungen zur spezifischen Bahn zu finden, gesagt, getan. In der Meldung, muss ich den Text erstmal einblenden, der mir jedoch keine neuen oder gar detaillierte Informationen liefert. Ich werde darauf hingewiesen, dass letztere im Ersatzfahrplan zu finden sind, der natürlich ein PDF ist, aber immerhin als Link. Das »Schönste« (und der eigentliche Auslöser für dieses Rant-Posting) kommt aber erst noch. In diesem PDF finden sich Tabellen, in denen die ausfallenden Fahrten markiert sind.

Wow, da muss aber offenbar viel »stabilisiert werden«. Ich bin kurz davor, eine andere Zugverbindung zu wählen. Doch ob der schieren Menge der augenscheinlich ausfallenden Fahrten werde ich skeptisch.

Ich konsultiere also die Legende zu dieser auf den ersten Blick sehr eindeutig erscheinenden Tabelle und siehe da, irgendjemand bei der Eurobahn hatte die grandiose Idee, stattfindende Fahrten mit einem roten X zu markieren – entgegen jedweder Konvention. An dieser Stelle würde ich gern die Formulierung »kannste dir nicht ausdenken« verwenden, aber ganz offensichtlich stimmt das ja nicht. Da ich meine übliche Phrase nicht verwenden kann, fehlen mir erstmal die Worte.

Irgendjemand hat sich das ausgedacht, und irgendjemand anders hat es vermutlich noch geprüft und für passend befunden. Diese Menschen sind offenbar nicht viel im Internet unterwegs.

Ich bin kein Freund der Bezeichnung »best practices«, aber gewisse Konventionen haben sich doch »eingebürgert«, und ein rotes X in einer Tabelle steht in aller Regel nicht für Positives, sondern meist für etwas fehlendes in einem Vergleich – eine haarsträubende Wahl. Die einzige These, die mir dazu in den Kopf kommt, ist, dass das Layout ursprünglich mit den diesbezüglich begrenzten Mitteln einer Tabellenkalkulation erstellt wurde und dann … tja, dann war vielleicht jemand am unpassenden Tag krank und Deadline und wichtig und ZACK ist es auf der Webseite, bzw. im PDF.

Well, turns out, my wordpress was too old to get updates, which brings me back to this old post, and let’s just say: F*** that! Most old links will probably be unfixable anyway.

So I just imported all the old posts from Wordpress (again) and redirected the domain to micro.blog. Done. Only took a few minutes. Bye bye Wordpress!

Es ist angeblich bereits fünf Jahre her, dass ich das letzte mal etwas auf diesem kümmerlichen Blog veröffentlicht habe. Es ist ja schon ein Klischee, aber irgendwie würde ich es gern wieder öfter füllen, nur womit? Möglicherweise Tipps zu macOS Produktivität Automatisierung, von dem Kerl, der sich am schnellsten von allen ablenken lässt, wenn es etwas zu automatisieren gibt … vielleicht. Ich bin ja schon ganz positiv überrascht, dass ich offenbar noch die aktuellste Wordpress-Version nutze. Ich kann mich gar nicht erinnern, das Update gemacht zu haben. Entweder sind die Zyklen dort auch nicht mehr das, was sie mal waren, oder meine Erinnerungen an solche Aktivitäten werden mittlerweile noch schneller verdrängt als früher. Immerhin war die Datenbank mal wieder nicht aktiv, so dass ich zumindest etwas korrigieren durfte.

• lets me drop images (mostly screenshots) onto it
• resize and crop these images, maybe even rotate
• quickly draw nice arrows (like Skitch or Shottr)
• add multiple text elements

Think of a mix of Curio (overkill) and one of the typical screenshot tools, like Shottr or Skitch. All apps that I found are either ported notebook apps from iPad, like Notability and GoodNotes, with non-Mac interfaces, screenshot tools (no blank canvas to start with), or for mind mapping. If I could drop images onto the canvas of Preview.app, it would be good enough, I guess, but well, I can’t. Does such a Mac app exist?

Switching to micro.blog with the help of Wordpress plugins

I’m still in the process of migrating my blog from Wordpress on a VPS to micro.blog. I don’t want to be responsible for a server anymore. Keeping it up-to-date and secure is interesting at times, but gets tedious pretty quickly. I reached the point, where I can’t even update the Debian distribution anymore, because it has gotten too old, or something like that. I’m no expert, which is part of the point I’m trying to make. Also insert famous Detective Murtaugh quote here.

The import function from micro.blog is pretty good, but soon after running it the first time, I realized that I have to clean up my posts before importing them.

Checking a 20 year old blog for broken links or missing images is quite a task. I have more than 3400 entries in my database. That’s a lot, but many of them are comments and old Tweets that were cross-posted automatically. Nevertheless I want to check all of them. This is where running Wordpress has its benefits. The large community increases the probability that a plugin I need already exists, and since broken links are bad for SEO, chances are even better. A quick search reveals Broken Link Checker, which is running right now and has already found more than 950 problematic entries¹.

Many private blogs or domains vanished. Videos were embedded via Shockwave/Flash plugins. Complete services have been shut down after being acquired, and last but not least I myself switched services and even my domain. Once the plugin finished, I have to decide on a case-to-case basis, what to do. I assume, there’s not much to automate in that step. At least there’s another nice plugin, that can help finding and replacing

Maybe this is a good project for 2021.
