Two tan bags with hinged gladstone type closures. One bag is tan and one bag is mahogany. The bags are identical in design except the handles on the tan bag are placed half an inch higher to make it slightly easier to grab. The bags are twelve inches long at the base and eleven inches long at the top. This is barely discernible because of the way the bags close. They are eight inches deep and six inches tall. The handles are made out of vegetable tanned leather in coordinating shades. The handles are attached with leather tabs that close with Chicago screw buttons. They are hand stitched with contrasting tan waxed thread. The same bags shown from the top with the bags closed and the handles folded down. The same bags tilted on their sides to show the bottom. The same bags shown opened, displaying their foiled lining for keeping food hot or cold.

Here is the final version of my Gladstone Lunch Bag. They were finished a few weeks ago but I did not post them immediately as I wanted my customer to see them first and choose between the two.
I really enjoyed this project. It was fun teaching myself how to use the gladstone hinges. I can see myself using them with other projects.

Six pieces of vegetable tanned leather, grain side up. They are shaped like horseshoes with the tips cut off. Two have longer ends that have been folded back onto themselves to hold brass "D" rings. These are riveted into place with the round end of the "D" inside the fold. The same pieces of leather however the pieces without the hardware are glued onto each side of the pieces with the hardware. This makes two handles with a piece of filler leather on each side of each handle, three pieces of leather each. The ends are clamped into place with green and black spring clamps whilst the glue dries. Two handles with a thin rectangular piece of vegetable tanned leather beside them. One handle has had leather wrapped around it and this leather is held in place with small, clear spring clamps. The other handle does not have a wrapping but shows signs of having been trimmed to round its shape. It should be understood by the composition of the photo that the rectangular piece of leather will be wound around the handle that has not yet been wrapped. Two handles, one with ends facing up and one with ends facing down, that have had their wrapping stitched onto them and have been dyed mahogany brown. The handles attached to a bag via decorative tabs fastened with Chicago button fasteners.

These handles take many steps and much time to complete but will last generations. Two handles are cut, along with four pieces of stiff leather filler. The hardware is riveted onto the handles. The filler pieces are glued over these rivets on either sides of the handles. The filler pieces are trimmed, top and bottom to even them out and round the tops. A rectangular piece of leather is "cased" (dampened with water), formed around each handle and stretched to accommodate the curves. These are clamped and allowed to dry. The handles are dyed to coordinate with the case they being fastened to, stitching holes are punched and then the covering is stitched on with contrasting waxed thread. The raw edge, along the top, is trimmed, sanded even and smooth and then edge finished to seal and refine.

A dark brown leather gladstone style bag. It is about nine inches high, eight inches wide and twelve inches long. It is made from pull up leather that is treated with wax and oils to give it variable tones and make it last longer. It has two tabs on the front and two tabs on the back that hold simple rounded leather handles. There is a strap that comes over the top of the bag to hold it closed, though this is not strictly necessary because the frame of the bag holds it closed. The strap is secured with a Chicago screw. The bag fully opened to show the silver reflective interior lining designed to keep food warm or cold, depending on which is preferred. The bag is designed to be a lunch bag. A side view of the bag showing how the top creases inward when the frame mechanism is closed.

Here is my gladstone lunch bag prototype. It did not turn out at all as I wished but it was the first time I have worked with this type of bag frame and I learned a lot. I now know what corrections to make. Though it is not what I was aiming for, it's still a decent bag and I may adopt it as my own lunch bag. I love the way pull up leather gives the colour of the bag more depth. Except for the insulated interior lining, this bag could have been made one hundred years ago. A light tan leather hand bag shaped like a half moon with the wide part at the bottom. It has long, thin handles just long enough to loop over a shoulder. These fasten in two points to the left and right side of the front and the left and right side of the back. They fasten with decorative tabs that loop through "d" rings at either end of the handles and then fasten with Chicago screws. From the left side of one of the handles is a leather pen case containing a pen. Another view of the front of the bag without the pen holder. A few of the inside of the bag showing four pockets and a metal loop to hold a key ring. A side view of the bag showing it is wider at the base and narrower on top. The bag closes with a zipper that has two tabs so it can be partially opened from one side whilst remaining closed on the opposite side.

Here is my new Woodruff Bag in tan Italian leather. There are four interior pockets and a key chain holder. The bag is partially lined in front and back. The remaining leather is finished so it does not need a lining. The zippered top has two sliders. The only thing I will change about this going forward is to make the zipper two inches longer so the bag can be opened slightly wider. The handles have a small strap to hold them together but this can be easily unfastened for easier access to the bag. This was my own invention because I get tired of handles slipping apart as I am carrying a bag.
