Comment on Easy on the sweetener, please: Visiting two Louisiana sugar plantations. by Heather Stretch

https://daveybot.wordpress.com/2...

Wonderful article. Thank you. Yes, a stomach wrenching period that is largely hidden from thought and sight. In terms of human years - not that long ago. An ideology of 'less than' and 'inferior' that damages both black and white Americans to this day. Education is an essential component in coming to terms of with the barbarity of the period. The German government made it policy to educate subsequent generations of their own heinous history of genocide. Why not the United States?

Comment on On Malcolm Fraser Architects by Trevor

https://daveybot.wordpress.com/2...

In reality, the majority of architects are not overpaid. If you compare the amount of time, effort and financial investment a student of architecture has to invest into becoming a registered architect, then in comparison to similarly long periods of professional education for other professions, e.g. lawyers, medical doctors, then (most) architects are underpaid. And also consider the fact that there is less employment stability in architecture; then you realise that you only become an architect for the love of the subject, and not for financial reward. Regards

Forth Bridge

https://daveybot.wordpress.com/2...

This week I experienced something very special: I went to the top of the Forth Bridge. Yeah: That one. I mean, just look at the view from up there! Read on and I shall describe how on earth I came to be there, and just what it’s like. Basically, it’s down to luck and the quick work … Continue reading Forth Bridge

Comment on Considering a proposal by David W

https://daveybot.wordpress.com/2...

Fully agree about lack of links in planning proposal related press articles to online council planning files especially for high profile proposals. I had a dialogue with an Evening News jouranlist a few years ago suggesting that this should be included but it lead no-where. Planning is not the most accessible topic but as noted above design statements do tend to include any 3d visualisations that are available. However most people with out an specific interest have no idea where to look and getting to plaaning proposal files can take a good number of clicks into council websites. Having said that online planning is great - prior to this you would have had to go to the planning office and request to see the drawings ...

Comment on Considering a proposal by Ali Morris (wifebot)

https://daveybot.wordpress.com/2...

One of the things that always bugs me about newspaper articles in particular is that they NEVER provide a link to the Planning Portal or the case reference number - which makes it even harder for people to engage with the process. Well done Daveybot for including it here - I can't over state how important it is for people to comment on applications that they care about. Comments below the line in an article have zero impact on the outcome of a case - comments submitted to the Planning Portal are taken into account when a proposal is assessed, and a great weight of public opinion can hold quite a lot of weight on a controversial case. Anyone reading this who cares about this case and who hasn't yet commented, please do (I'm off to draft my own comments now!)...

Considering a proposal

https://daveybot.wordpress.com/2...

There’s a controversial proposal in front of the Edinburgh Council at the moment, to turn the former Royal High School building on Calton Hill into a big posh hotel. There are some adjustments to the iconic classical building proposed, as well as the addition of two large new wings of accommodation. Much has been written … Continue reading Considering a proposal

The unknown: Fashion and kids. At the same time.

Just what kind of photographer are you, anyway? I mostly point my camera at architecture. I’ve learned, I hope, through repeated practice and study, how to create a shot which reflects what a designer had in mind for a space. I study the drawings, research the movement of the sun relative to the architecture, plan for bad weather, hunt … Continue reading The unknown: Fashion and kids. The World is a poorer place without MFA. They were exceptional. The individuals at MFA in their own way will continue to inspire us and we will be grateful and glad of that... My thoughts are with them now at this difficult time.

Easy on the sweetener, please: Visiting two Louisiana sugar plantations.

https://daveybot.wordpress.com/2...

My wife Alison is an architectural historian. I’m an architectural photographer. We weren’t going to drive through Louisiana without stopping at some of the famous plantations, but we were both surprised at what we found. In advance of our trip, my obsession had been with Live Oaks. These broad, spreading trees create the most beautiful … Continue reading Easy on the sweetener, please: Visiting two Louisiana sugar plantations.

On Malcolm Fraser Architects

https://daveybot.wordpress.com/2...

In the comments section of every architecture story in this country, you will find fist-dragging idiots moaning about  corruption and regurgitating the phrase ‘overpaid architects’. Well, they get a particularly angry punch in the throat from me today. Last night, we learned that Malcolm Fraser Architects has gone into liquidation. I mean, just look at all that! Malcolm … Continue reading On Malcolm Fraser Architects

On symmetry and serendipity – a photograph in Marrakech

https://daveybot.wordpress.com/2...

Here’s a photograph from my last trip to Marrakech: Sit, my friends, and I shall tell you the long, rambling, obsessive tale of how I took it… The building is the Ben Youssef Medersa, up in the northern half of the medina of Marrakech, just above the souks. This stunning old Islamic college was founded … Continue reading On symmetry and serendipity – a photograph in Marrakech
