2.1.2025 01:25Comment on There Is So Much Good Music On BBC iPlayer by richard@rock-n-reel.co.ukRecently, BBC2 had it’s 60th Birthday, which comes as a shock to people of my age as we can remember when it started broadcasting! It’s remit was to be a mixed-genre channel appealing to a broad adult audience with programmes of depth and substance, complemented by distinctive comedy, drama and arts programming. Now for those […]

10.11.2024 16:04Comment on The Lost Beatles Albums by richard@rock-n-reel.co.ukSome years ago I bought a very interesting book called ‘What If’. It was a series of essays written by eminent military historians that discussed how the world could have followed an alternate path if certain things in history had happened differently. For example: ‘What if the Spanish Armada had succeeded’, or, ‘The Americans had […]

24.9.2024 12:59Comment on Who Played That? by richard@rock-n-reel.co.ukOne of the great things about listening to music is the discovery of something that you hadn’t noticed before. It could be some guitar work, or a harmony vocal, or an imaginative bass line, or a slick piece of keyboards; it’s always been there of course but you hadn’t noticed. When you first pick up […]

Hi Richard, I'm pleased to say that I didn't think I knew anyone who had a Top Of The Pops album, until this afternoon. Debbie read the article and embarrassingly admitted she had one, although she quickly mentioned that it was given to her as a Christmas present. Interestingly, until she read the post she had no idea they were cover versions. You mention about the sales. I first started having meetings with Pickwick who were my supplier just after Gary Le Count had replaced Monty Lewis as MD. Gary's first decision had been to scrap Top Of The Pops as he wanted to take Pickwick more upmarket and give them credibility with the major record companies. This strategy worked and over the next few years they created a formidable catalogue of albums, at a budget price, and set up a joint video company with BBC and CIC (the US film company). However, Gary did tell me a few years later that the first year's account after he took over had been a real problem for him because dropping TOTP had left a huge hole in their profit. As ever - hope you're well. Keep in touch. Colin

Like you I would not touch these albums with a proverbial bargepole. What is surprising is that they sold in such large quantities. Have you any idea who was buying them as I don’t recall any of my mates owning up! Thanks Richard
19.7.2024 21:14Comment on “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, that mediocrity can pay to greatness.” Oscar Wilde by richard@rock-n-reel.co.ukFor those of us who are relics of the 20th century, the phrase ‘Top Of The Pops’ is seen as synonymous with a BBC TV programme that went out on Thursday evenings and brought to us new releases and a run-down of the singles chart, culminating in ‘this week’s number 1!’ However, there was another […]
19.7.2024 08:08“Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, that mediocrity can pay to greatness.” Oscar WildeHi Colin, interesting stuff. I remember the Dead coming over in 1972. I probably would have seen them if the Rainbow Theatre hadn't closed. Somehow I was not aware that they played at Ally Pally in 1974, so I missed them a second time. The 1974 tour was short; only seven dates, of which three were at the Palace. As usual the concerts were recorded and the highlights of the three nights was released as a triple cd as Volume 7 of Dick's Picks. It features Playing In The Band (23+ minutes), Weather Report Suite (18+ minutes) and a 24 minute Dark Star. Tensions within the band were running high and the hiatus from touring would follow very shortly in October 1974. After 9 years of almost continuous touring they needed a break and during this time many solo projects surfaced. As someone (Bill Graham?) said "the Grateful Dead are not best at what they do, they are the only ones that do what they do". Regarding Sweetheart of the Rodeo, I had read a different account of the issue of the final release. The version I read was that Gram Parsons sang lead on some of the songs, wrote some of the material and played rhythm guitar on the original recording. At some point before the album was released it was brought to the attention of executives at CBS that Parsons was still contracted to LHI, a company which was owned by Lee Hazelwood. LHI had released the only album Parsons had had released prior to joining the Byrds. The album, as you know, was Safe At Home by the International Submarine Band. Hazelwood threatened to sue CBS if the released the Sweerheart album with Parsons lead vocals, and it was clear that there was going to be a lengthy legal battle. To avoid delaying the release more than necessary CBS arranged with Roger McGuinn for Parson's leads to be re-recorded. This delayed the release by about eight weeks and by the time of its' release Parsons had left the band. I wonder if the real reason for re-recordinng the vocal leads was due to Parsons not being in the band anymore, and therefore unable to promote it, rather than the legal issue. CheersJohn

Hi Julie, Yes, it is ages since we spoke - how are you? How are John and the children? You may have noticed that I've not been posting on the blog as often, that's because I have a part time job. I am an exam invigilator at Matthew's school for the year 10 mocks and the year 11 GCSEs. Something that's a huge departure from anything I've done previously so quite a learning curve. Add to that my 'retired occupation' of washing clothes, food shopping, gardening (I've just planted potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers and cougettes) and a bit of DIY, and time is not as plentiful as it used to be. Coming up on the Friday does make a lot of sense. We are here all weekend - really looking forward to seeing you all, and happy to entertain here in our house by West Common. best regards to all Colin
