My sister has a friend who grows lavender. Their farm has quite a few varieties, and they give tours and have a little gift shop. She realized they didn't have any greeting cards featuring lavender, so I whipped one up for fun.

Wow, what an experience. I struggled to find a simple way to paint these blooms, but everything I could find degenerated into abstract blobs. I was not going to replicate a cotton swab to do "dabs" in Procreate... So I settled on making a chain brush that helped me figure out the placement of each whorl (group of calyx buds) which I then modified with a bit of variety.

I also experimented with a huge variety of compositional choices and backgrounds before I settled on a simple watercolor wash. I tried to put in texture, but it felt too heavy for the amount of detail in the lavender stems, so I took it out.

I think it turned out nicely in the end, and I printed out a couple greeting cards which look nice. I don't do "spec work" like this might seem--I'm using this for my own purposes!!! But if they find it interesting then I can send them a stock of greeting card packs. We'll see.

I got my first set done! Woohoo!

I used one of my favorite bird images I made last year, and created a set of 23 different stationery pages plus 9 envelopes! Then I stuck it in a digital downloadable pack and made some graphics and voila!!

My first bird-themed print-it-yourself digital stationery pack!!

I'm really happy with this one! I think the papers are a really nice balance of options between fancy "headliner image" pages and "supplementary" pages that don't have a lot of visuals competing for the reader's attention. I think letters can be composed in more than just the writing! The bird, a Central American Turquoise-Browed Motmot, is a favorite image of mine--so much so that I used it on my art calendar last year!

The pack is for sale here: https://goimagine.com/turquoise-browed-motmot-printable-stationery-printable-writing-paper-with-envelope-lined-and-unlined-digital-notepaper-instant-download/

And here: https://coreyartuscommunity.com/products/turquoise-browed-motmot-bird-print-it-yourself-55-piece-stationery-pack

I'm so happy with this!! It's the first in a long line of stationery packs because I think the birds were simply made for this!! I get to play with textures and images and graphics all at the same time! Woot!!

More packs to come! Wooho!

So my discovery that I could make my own notepads sent me hurtling down a rabbit hole, and I spent all day using my bird images to make lined and unlined stationery papers! I’ve been struggling trying to figure out graphics using my bird imagery because my birds are so richly dark, and that’s a problem when it comes to paper… I mean, what’s the point of using a pretty stationery if you can’t read what you just wrote?!

But I think I figured something out that lets me indulge in some texture fun that I absolutely love! I now have an approach to using my birds in a way that won’t darken too much of the paper, with out my needing to crop each one into something that looks like an afterthought…

I’m so excited about these! I’ll be packaging several together and putting them up for sale as print-it-yourself digital downloads in my shops soon at https://coreyartuscommunity.com/collections/all and my shop at Goimagine: https://goimagine.com/coreyartusimagery/ .

But I thought I’d share one set here, just for sneak peek funsies!

This little sampler has JPGs of a single sheet of paper with lined & unlined versions as well as a business-sized envelope. I like to print them borderless, but I know most printers don’t do that and they should look just fine with a nice white margin around them defining their edges!

Enjoy!

Today, I experimented with another gelli plate monoprint I made, which I’d taken a picture of and popped into Procreate. Then I inserted illustrations I’d done in the past to suggest a Little Red Riding Hood moment. I really like working off traditional art, and I’m excited to see where this takes me. I’m hoping that I can further refine what I’m doing but at the moment I’m liking the organic and spontaneous quality of the process I’m doing right now.

Onward!

Trying out a new Gelli Plate Mono-printing technique that I learned this last weekend during a workshop class with an artist friend of mine. I am beyond ecstatic about this process, and while I’m still struggling to figure out how to incorporate it into my digital world, I can tell I’ll enjoy seeking solutions!

This piece used a simple feather as the main motif against large swaths of colored texture, but when I popped it into Procreate and started to play with incorporating some other bird-themed digital art I’d made over the past year the magic started to happen. I felt like this was meant to be!

It’s probably too busy, and the colors a bit too garish, but I think collaging imagery into interesting narratives might be a tool I want to use some more. There’s something about the “traditional” aspect to the art-making that grounds it for me and makes it more “substantive” somehow. It means more. To me.

So here’s my first attempt at melding my digital efforts and my new-found traditional efforts! I’m going to be sharing a LOT more of this in the future!!

I've learned I'm more productive as an artist when I corral my efforts around a thematic or stylistic set of parameters. In the past I've done long series of hands, landscapes, flowers, and birds. Usually I end up with work that I can then turn toward a variety of forms for sharing with others like speedpaints, livestreams, wallpapers, etc. Ultimately I end up with work I can make stationery from, like calendars, greeting cards, and print-it-yourself paper sets.

Lately I’ve been focusing those efforts toward my new greeting-card-of-the-month club, Coreyartus Card Club: https://coreyartuscommunity.com/

But recently, I was looking for more "zen-ful" art making experiences and turned toward teacups. In my opinion, disconnecting and simply enjoying a restorative pot of tea is one of the most therapeutic acts a person can do...

My family does tea and dessert at every holiday after a big meal. It’s a thing. The great-great-grandmother matriarch of the family has a large set of tea paraphernalia with a number of teapots and cup-and-saucer sets. Her collection is vast.

Easter weekend, I was reminded that all her teacups have a history, a story behind them, a reason they’re in her collection. Gifts from others, purchases, souvenirs… They all have a sentiment. They mean something.

She has them displayed in her hutch, and inspired her grandchildren to create their own collections. It’s a thing.

So I started to take pictures of them to draw later. And I think I’m going to be at this a while. I think it’s an opportunity to hear stories and write them down to share with my illustrations. I feel a sort of… responsibility now? Maybe?

Every cup of tea brings a tale. And I think I’m going to enjoy telling them.

As I prepare to launch my own patron membership club, I'm humbled and thankful I have such great models in Rafi Perez and Klee Angelie, the artist couple behind the Rogue Artist community.

They answered some questions I had about Patreons today, and it was really useful. I thought I'd share!

My greeting card of the month club will soon be going live on https://coreyartuscommunity.com and I'm calling it the Coreyartus Card Club. The image on this post shares the membership tiers I've developed thus far, and I'm really excited about its launch date of March 1, 2024.

So save the date! Get pre-stamped greeting cards in the mail each month and connect with your own community off the internet!

Well, okay, most everyone knows I do a lot of livestreaming.
But they rarely get to see behind the camera...

I simulcast to two platforms, both of which I dearly love. My Fediverse home is on a PeerTube instance called MakerTube.net. It's specifically for makers, artists, crafters, musicians, and DIY'ers. I have all my speedpaint videos up there, and essentially stopped posting them to YouTube because I don't want people to have to sit through ads to watch my stuff. I pay a weekly contribution to it, and the admin, Jan, who is in Berlin, is an incredible guy who has bent over backwards to make it a great space.

https://makertube.net/a/coreyartus/video-channels

My other home is on LiveSpace, a growing livestreaming platform that is couching itself as an alternative to Twitch and Kick for creatives. It was made with musicians in mind (and of course it has drawn a lot of multi-streaming gamers) but it has unique features that other platforms don't have: a social media feed built in on site, subscription only posts, storefront integration with Fourthwall, and an owner who streams an AMA twice a week. It is growing by leaps and bounds, and needs more creatives to try it out.

https://live.space/Coreyartus

My livestream rig is sorta janky but I'm happy with it. I clip up green screen fabric to a folding screen, use my camera phone as a webcam, and use cheap lights to make it all work. I use Ecamm, a Mac-based app, to stream instead of OBS, and I have a nice Sketchboard Pro to mount my iPad to when I do my art.

Anyway, I thought I'd share, since I haven't posted in what seems like a very long time. I've been busy getting a Fourthwall merch and patron membership site up, as well as establishing a steady streaming schedule. Thought I'd share the room where it happens.
