My concern with modded Android apps (especially ones that don't seem to be open source) is that you're trusting the person who modded the app, and I couldn't find many details about the people behind that specific app. In addition, since this seems to be released on a number of random apk download sites, there's no way to guarantee that you're downloading the real WhatsApp Plus from any site. Someone might be hosting what they claim to be WhatsApp plus but in reality it contains malware. Even a real-looking "official site" might be fake! I'd try to stay away from apps like that personally.

I agree that this makes is more inconvenient for some users; however, I also think it makes it easier for tech-illiterate people to start using the app. After all, assuming you and the person you're communicating with both have a phone, it's much easier for them to text you this way than it is for them to remember someone's username (especially if it was a random string) on yet another platform. For the majority of users, this makes onboarding much easier. This also makes spam prevention easier; after all, then a spammer needs a new phone number for each account they plan on using for their spam messages. If a number gets banned, it's more of a hassle than it is if they don't need to link a number. On the other hand, I believe I read somewhere that Signal is working on making phone numbers optional. I can't find that source, however, so take this with a grain of salt. I agree that requiring phone numbers is a bit of a hurdle for some users, but I also see why these two platforms require them and I think they have good reasons.
