So...@zdl@mastodon.online @kyozou@sfba.social I'm not trying to correct any of the key points you made. It just seems that given his background, Mao Wenchao must have been aware how the name of his app would have sounded to English speakers. Maybe he did it on purpose, or maybe he just didn't care because the English-speaking world was completely irrelevant to him at the time. Both are possible. I just don't believe that the very association never even crossed his mind until some Americans started showing up on his platform three days ago.
Because ultimately I start from the assumption that the current crop of Chinese leaders (both in business and politics, and unlike their navel-gazing Western counterparts) are at least somewhat aware of the ideas and opinions of the rest of the world. If you think that's the wrong attitude then fine, I'll never bother you with it again.

I mean, he's a Chinese man called Mao who studied and worked in the West for years. Imagine how many times he must have heard the same lazy jokes about his name over and over again.
On the other hand, the Cultural Revolution period is unique in recent Chinese history, in that the Chinese government does allow relatively critical discourse about it. Take this notebook I bought 10 years ago in a pretty mainstream souvenir shop near 后海. It strikes me that the subject isn't totally off-limits for gentle mockery. So it doesn't seem inconceivable to me that Mao calculated he could get away with it as long as he maintained a degree of plausible deniability.
