NASA’s D&D Adventure: The Lost Universe

https://archivesofmu.wordpress.c...

https://science.nasa.gov/mission/hubble/multimedia/online-activities/the-lost-universe NASA made an adventure module. “This adventure is designed for a party of 4-7 level 7-10 characters and is easily adaptable for your preferred tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) system.” And its 44 pages of mostly two-column text and a few images from NASA that don’t really feel D&D. Nothing wrong with that. But haven’t […]

Another thought on citing work

https://archivesofmu.wordpress.c...

I went to the library today and noticed that a few books I was looking at mostly just used crappy blogs and news sites for their references. The end of the books were just pages crammed full of ”researchers say…” articles and similar crap. Needless to say I put those books back on the shelf and […]

Comment on You’re wrong about the four zen moments by Tamás Illés

Most rules lite authors probably like the "wrong interpretation" because it justifies the existence of the low effort shovelware they churn out.

Good post! I just want to point out that the pop-OSR reaction roll *also* exists in OD&D, found on page III:12. Charisma isn't *explicitly* listed there as a potential modifier, but from how it's written the assumption would certainly be very natural even if we didn't have subsequent editions affirming that it does modify the throw.

You’re wrong about the four zen moments

https://archivesofmu.wordpress.c...

A Quick Primer for Old School Gaming, aka the Matt Finch Primer was actually really good. The problem is few of you fools actually read it. Four zen moments have gone from things to think about to axioms not to think about. These are system specific explanations of why Swords and Wizardry, and ‘74 D&D […]

Recent controversies – traverse fantasy exposed a NuSR game as very plagaristic [1] and in other news Hbomberguy just made a pretty good video ‘bout plagarism on youtube [2] (which I found out through Lem_Fliggity’s comment on the traversefantasy post and promptly watched) put plagiarism citations toward the front of my mind. So today I […]

Failures are just learning experiences

https://archivesofmu.wordpress.c...

I wanted to enter No Artpunk III to show off what I’ve learned in the last year. But I only made the decision early this November. At the time it seemed possible but I knew I couldn’t make something as ambitious as some of the competition. Forward to today, and I have written a meager […]

Ryuutama: Frameworks / Red Dragon Story

https://archivesofmu.wordpress.c...

Just getting these thoughts down so I can focus on my OD&D campaign (coming “soon”), and more importantly on my gainful employment. Ryuutama is a cutesy Japanese RPG about normal people stricken with wanderlust. It is a lunch break RPG, designed to be played in shorter sessions 1-3 hours leaning toward less. The game expects […]

Comment on Recruiting, drafting, and selling monsters by Ethan B.

In reply to Simulated Knave. I stand by my interpretation but yours is just as right in any ways that matter. OD&D is a foundation to build a campaign out of that touches on many points instead of going into deeper detail on a few of them, and is also disorganized and vague. Those are two different things. Trying to figure out what the hell Gary is talking about or patching oversights is flaws, but being forced to make game design decisions that shape my campaign into something unique is exactly what I signed on for by grabbing the 3 little books instead of B/X or AD&D. Modern 'rules-lites' expect you to use 'rulings' to make up for missing rules, but OD&D expects you to mostly use rulings to make existing rules better. Also the references to the dragon procedure is one single bit that points you to booklet 2, implications otherwise are the fault of my writing. I referenced it a lot because the sections on subdued dragons are more material than the stuff in booklet 1.

Comment on Recruiting, drafting, and selling monsters by Simulated Knave

https://archivesofmu.wordpress.c...

My reaction to it would be that if your alignments match you are hiring them, or at least imposing fairly friend servitude, while if your alignments don't match you're enslaving them. No selling people whose alignment matches yours except on very friendly terms and probably not even then. The repeated mentions of the rules surrounding dragons to me strongly suggests you're supposed to use these cross-alignment, or what's the point? Also I think you (and many, many others) really undersell 'coherence' as a feature in a rules system. Good editing is a feature, not a bug, and if that means the GM house rules a hole area rather than patching a million leaks that's not a flaw.

The original 1974 3 little brown booklets in a white box edition D&D is great. They really nailed it the first time, and the omissions and recontextualizations that began immediately after its release is a real shame. At least we got AD&D before the storygamers wrecked everything beyond repair. Its true that OD&D is a […]

Why D&D Bards are like that

https://archivesofmu.wordpress.c...

Sorry, this isn’t about memes. The Bard of D&D is a man of many talents as well as magical potency. He can do a little bit of everything, and is considered good at it. Except for the one in the movie, of course. Where does that come from? Weren’t renaissance bards just a bunch of […]

The mothership RPG has a couple of winners in this regard - Gradient Descent has "human scale" vs. "industrial scale" i.e. things where a grid map makes sense vs. "it'll take you hours to navigate this thing". The Tyranny of The Grid holds us all back

this shit is cray cray... an irritating scratch has become a festering wound of money and, bright colors, and wonky layout It's fine. Everything's fine. In the future these Kickstarters will all have DLC models and you'll have to flex-goal initiative, exploration rules, and character backgrounds I don't know man I just don't know

Tombpunk. Darkbad was justified. A glut of interchangable artpunk systems, beautiful yet not so useful flood the marketplace and how many RPG discussion grounds. I guess that’s what happens when a DIY movement turns into a marketing tag. You may not like what you see when I hold a funhouse mirror to this horde of […]

Some time do yourself a favour and google "Descent level maps" and look at the results. Suffice to say that there's some gems in there. Makes sense, given Descent was about 3D mines and flying through them.

I don’t see any conceptual difference between good elf’s/bad elf’s/demons/devils/aliens/undead I think it’s our newfangled need to categorize everything, something that probably the average elf-shot victim of the Dark Ages didn’t worry about too much as he whistled past the graveyard on a foggy night I like it - did we play DCC at all when you were gaming with us?

4th place is not bad for a first attempt though :P Your contribution is a credit to the collection. I think we nailed both the 'bigger' and the 'more controversial' goals. You do a pretty sick Patrick Stuart imitation. I would keep working on that. You'll get far.
