13.10.2024 01:45testing one two The post appeared first on Anthony DeRosa.Wittgenstein, Language, and My Daughter I first encountered Ludwig Wittgenstein’s ideas about language during a philosophy class in college. At the time, I thought, “Great, another dead white guy with an unpronounceable name telling us how to think.” Little did I know that his work would become a cornerstone of my daily life, helping me […]

24.8.2024 23:14A Loss for WordsI didn’t write much about Anthony Bourdain when he died, partly because so much had been said about him, partly because I was in such shock and disbelief, and partly because it just didn’t seem like the right time. I hadn’t processed it yet. I still remember where I was when I heard the news, […]

26.6.2023 02:37The Tony I KnewThe Pickrick, once located at 891 Hemphill Street NW in Atlanta, Georgia was originally owned by segregationist Lester Maddox, who later became governor in 1966. Maddox shut the diner down in 1965 rather than comply with a court order to desegregate. On one occasion, he waved a gun at three black men who came to eat […]

27.6.2020 15:29Neil DeRosa and The Transformation of The PickrickI created a Tumblr where I’m hoping to archive some of the best wisdom from the late, great David Carr. I’m calling it Carr-isms. If you have your own favorite quotes from David, please do pass them along.

7.7.2017 14:43Comment on Portfolio by Featured TV and Video Clips | Anthony De RosaI really enjoy and usually agree with much of what Joshua Topolsky has to say about the world of tech and media but felt compelled to respond to his New Yorker article “The End of Twitter” I wanted to annotate it with Genius but for whatever reason, wasn’t able to, so I’ll post sections I want […]

30.1.2016 19:19A response to “The End of Twitter”Circa was an atom in the universe of Semantic Web and Structured Journalism. I’d like to think we created a Big Bang, which resulted in apps like NYT Now, WSJ’s “What’s News”, Yahoo’s News Digest and countless others. However, we didn’t create the concept, we just built upon it and hopefully took it further than it had been executed, or conceptualized before. […]

23.10.2015 19:16Standing on the shoulders of giantsWe reached an inflection point long ago. The vast majority of users prefer apps over mobile web as they continue to prefer mobile over desktop in increasing numbers. The problem is that the folks who create what we consume don’t have the same ability to create and iterate with the same flexibility and ease when building […]

2.8.2015 19:14The app world needs to be wild and free like the web(I wound up expanding on this idea in an op-ed for the L.A. Times, which you can read here) There’s two schools of thought when it comes to publishing news. There’s the traditional approach, where you take your time and make sure you have multiple named sources you’re personally and directly in contact with. That […]

27.7.2015 16:12Transparency and Process JournalismI really loved this app. The design and UX was beautiful and it was usually a seamless experience. More importantly it was my go to news source and I really appreciated the editorial aggregation approach. It felt as if I was actually getting the true facts of the story and not just a news outlets own biased point of view. After weeks of still getting the push notifications from the app, I had to uninstall. It made me also realize that if given the opportunity to pay a monthly fee, I would have. I wish you guys all the best in your future endeavors but please know that I personally know dozens of other people who were upset at the closing down of circa. Hopefully you can somehow keep the dream alive.

13.7.2015 05:27Comment on Farewell Circa by LauraYou were and always be the best in your field. I can see that many people are willing to pay for your unmatchable service and so am I. Beautiful design, comprehensive and to-the-point content neatly sorted by categories, and an ability to follow stories: this is that distinguishes you from copycats. Thank you for your work and service.
11.7.2015 15:23Comment on Farewell Circa by DavranWill miss this app, it was always my afternoon break to catch up on news and reminded it was my halfway point of my day. I loved the format steaight to the point news without all the sensationalism. Sad to see you go.
