I don’t think I’ve taken enough advantage of one aspect of tenure, which is that I can now write about some of my interests without worry about whether it will turn off a job committee. One of these is my life-long love of video games and I hope to use this space to write a … Continue reading "Neverending Fantasy: A Final Fantasy Replay Journal Part 1"

31.12.2024 16:36Comment on The Science of Utopia? by My 2024 Reading List – Andrew Israel RossOne of my resolutions last year was to just read more for pleasure and indeed fiction proved one of my most joyful escapes in what was a pretty rough year. I kept things fairly light, with a lot of genre fiction I had been meaning to get to for a while now (I have the … Continue reading "My 2024 Reading List"
31.12.2024 16:36My 2024 Reading ListOne of my ongoing academic obsessions, since they were the subject of my very first publication, is the history of public urinals. I even got to help out with a memorial plaque that’s going up in Paris at one of the last remaining pissotières in the city (not sure if it’s up yet). I can’t … Continue reading "Paris and the Public Urinal"
11.12.2024 13:42Paris and the Public UrinalOn my flight back from the annual meeting of the Western Society for French History, I was seated next to a woman who struck me as the quintessential representative of San Francisco. I didn’t quite catch all the details, but needless to say she is quite wealthy and lives near Jack Dorsey, runs a foundation, … Continue reading "They Rule Our World"
25.11.2024 19:31They Rule Our WorldIn reply to Zach. It's also pretty tiresome being told how I, a member of a minority group, should feel about a dominant group trying to erase my culture!
1.11.2024 14:46Comment on On Being Jewish in the Deep South by airossYour sentence about a Christian talking to you about converting and you seeing it as “anti-Semitism” says all I need to know. This entire article is you pretending to be a victim, your reply to the other comment is once again you pretending to be a victim. It’s all so tiresome.
30.10.2024 22:35Comment on On Being Jewish in the Deep South by ZachI’ve been working on an article examining Josephine Butler’s campaign against morals policing in Paris for quite a while now and it’s finally out. This article, the first published section of my new book project, explores how Butler’s advocacy against regulated prostitution shaped and was shaped by her time in Paris during the 1870s. It … Continue reading "New Article: Josephine Butler in Paris"
6.6.2024 14:55New Article: Josephine Butler in ParisThe last time I used WordPress for an assignment was in my old job at the University of Southern Mississippi where I taught a course I called “History in the Digital Age.” I decided to try to incorporate the use of WordPress for a simple digital exhibit into a more traditional course this semester, “Gender, … Continue reading "Digital Exhibits on “Gender, Race, and Class in Modern Europe”"
13.5.2024 17:49Digital Exhibits on “Gender, Race, and Class in Modern Europe”Just in awe at the tension evident in this Washington Post article on the recent move by police forces across the country against pro-Palestinian encampments on university campuses (the screenshot is from my iPad and the article may look different by now or on a different app): Yes, campus protestors should be non-violent, but in … Continue reading "Who needs to refrain from violence?"
2.5.2024 16:26Who needs to refrain from violence?I just finished reading Benjamin Breen’s Tripping on Utopia for my book club. This was one of those nice instances where I got to read some history for pleasure. The book was pretty much perfect for this kind of exercise. Breen is an excellent narrator and he makes the story truly compelling even as it … Continue reading "The Science of Utopia?"
29.4.2024 20:40The Science of Utopia?I was asked to participate in an article for Loyola’s student newspaper on books that shaped me. The full article has some great reads (and some questionable ones, I admit). They didn’t include my full explanations of my choices, so here they are: Orientalism by Edward Said: This was my introduction to critical theory and to … Continue reading "The Professor’s Bookshelf"
26.4.2024 12:38The Professor’s BookshelfGot more books on my mind than usual these days. Some initial thoughts: Tripping on Utopia: Margaret Mead, the Cold War, and the Troubled Birth of Psychedelic Science by Benjamin Breen: This one is for my book club and I’m finding it fascinating. I confess I knew very little about Margaret Mead beyond the basics. … Continue reading "Currently Reading"

22.7.2020 19:07Comment on Josephine Butler on the Police by airossGreetings from Scotland. Found your site whilst looking for Josephine Butler's "Government by Police". Interesting. I don't do social media, so I hope you'll continue to blog :) I've ticked/checked the "Notify me of new posts by email" box.

4.6.2020 15:49Comment on Josephine Butler on the Police by Calling the Police – Andrew Israel RossIn reply to Clean Leon. I'm not a religious studies professor, so we don't discuss criticism of Christianity at all, beyond a recognition of the historical practices of the Church and churches. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "flaws of their own people," though I might hazard a guess. That you equate criticism of Christians, a historically dominant group for thousands of years, with "criticism" of Jews, a group oppressed -- often by Christians -- for thousands of years probably says all we need to know.
27.1.2020 13:58Comment on On Being Jewish in the Deep South by airossDo you allow your Christian students to discuss how criticism about Christianity from Jews often comes from a place of ignorance and prejudice? I had many Jewish professors and they never discussed the flaws with their own people, or allowed it in class.
