Looking back on Genuary 2025 I completed 23 of 31 prompts this year, which I'm pretty happy with. Moving away from the aim of doing one a day, or at least in the right order certainly helped. However, towards the end I definitely did run out of steam and ideas a bit, and found myself re-using concepts rather than coming up with anything novel. As a wrap up I wanted to regenerate and plot my favourites, to tidy up the code and prove I still could. As I've not always used consistent colours this came out as a 21-layer file, and of course I messed up the alignment on one of them! Making this grid was fun but I think I'll go back to plotting a single motif at a time. In order: 1, 2, 3, 5, 9, 10, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18, 22, 23, 24, 25, 29 -- which one was your favourite? I think there are a few I might want to develop further, though I did say that last year... More grid-based layout than graphic design, but it was fun to use my previous gradient code and fit it into a randomly generated and selected grid layout. However, there are too many possibilities and I had to go through quite a few generation to get a sensible version that had all the features I wanted (a cell wide enough for the text, several cells that were approximately square to replace with polygons, gutters that weren't so thin that the cells almost overlapped)... KiCAD + Freerouting, I manually created a nonsense circuit schematic, placed the components in their positions more or less randomly, then let the auto routing do its thing to draw the copper traces. Such as randomly generating the components, connections, and positions and setting more sensible design rules for pen plotting. Code on the last slide, 42 lines added to my usual template page, that is - I'm still using libraries for convenient access to randomness, setting parameters, and drawing to SVG but this should need minimal changes to work directly on an HTML canvas object. The mechanics of the rack and pinion worked surprisingly well on the second iteration, and should allow more granular control of the brush height and pressure and a wider range of motion. If I get round to actually adapting the software to it, that is. The first drawings here were made by manually editing the gcode to start the pen lift early and not wait for it to finish before painting the last segment of each drop so they line skills get thinner towards the top. I've first come across this idea in the paper "An Accessible, Three-Axis Plotter for Enhancing Calligraphy Learning through Generated Motion" (Fang et al, 2024). I designed the extra parts in SolveSpace to fit my existing pen lift setup and used an OpenSCAD gear generator by janssen86 for the rack and pinion shapes. #penplotter #3dprinting #gears #rackandpinion #experimental

I then use rejection sampling (more likely to select points far away from the shape, and never inside) and for each selected point calculate the gradient using the Sobel operator by comparing against nearby points. I do believe it's possible to do live coding with a plotter but this attempt showed there's still some way to go to make the process more frictionless and interactive. The plotter started moving after 26 minutes, and around fifty minutes in I've got the first drawing that is based on the code written. So not much time left to get creative! And that was with being able to use a template that I put together for all my genuary pieces, and a server I had previously set up so I could send SVG code directly to the plotter from the web page. #livecoding #penplotter #penplotterart #genuary #genuary27 #genuary2024 #challenge

While I wanted to stick to pen plotter drawings this year, this one called for an animation, so it was a nice excuse to get the automated lightpainting rig out again. I first generated fifty frames of the animation digitally, from a 3D scene of a camera moving through the star field of points. Then I mounted a red LED in place of the pen on my plotter, and connected the shutter release input on my camera to it as well so I can open and close the shutter (in bulb timer mode) with a gcode command at the beginning and end of every frame. Then it's just waiting for maybe half an hour while the robot rapidly moves the LED back and forth, and switching it on and off, creating traces in the long exposure photograph. Finally, those 50 photos are put together to create the two-second timelapse video. Technically it shows how many optimized paths have been drawn so far, not overall progress, but it's probably still more accurate than most file copy estimates. Aligning the different pens is quite tricky and when I don't get it quite right, I end up with a 3D effect with the black lines being slightly offset from the silver. I first generate a voronoi pattern by randomly selecting points within the area and then relaxing the resulting mesh a little (LLoyd's algorithm). The shading is designed to follow a 2D Perlin noise field. The cells are sorted by desired hue and split into groups, where each group begins with a dip in the blue ink and draws maybe 10 or so cells, so the ink will gradually fade towards yellow. However, this process is not quite predictable as the ink in the dipping well mixes with that in the cartridge over time as well, so later groups tend to be more yellow than blue. Now I need a break! I think I'll go back to leaving the decision-making to the computers though. This was fun to build but the latency of a few seconds means I'm not truly reacting to what's been drawn already yet. #plotparty #splitscreen #penplotter #livedrawing #plotterart #ink

Second piece in this series: I'm now drawing the columns in sets of two and not fully in order, to cover more drawing distance for the same vertical movement, and to reduce the ink spilling into adjacent columns (this still happens a bit, was more obvious with the previous yellow and purple). Not sure if I like the two up columns yet, it reduces the entropy somewhat. This is the first instance, pretty good but not perfect guess at how much ink I'd need (the yellow in the converter ran out about 4 columns before the end, the purple in the dip pot I could refill halfway through).
