Sunday is usually dedicated to making (my way of relaxing), but I'm very tired today, so I'll mostly go through my notes and read up on stuff. I plan to build a pedal powered, electrical assisted bike RV. Through the years I've dreamt up several different iterations, so I might as well bring it into reality. (Plush dino for neck support, if needed.)

I've assembled around sixty pieces of IKEA furniture by now (I've literally lost count), so I didn't document the entire process. A few tips for you though; knoll the screws etc on a small tray - keeps them in place and makes them easy to move. Secure the tray with a piece of sticky tack if needed.
Second: take it slow and be calm. Not zen calm - calmer than that; imagine you're a stoner. A stoner on the level "Woooooow! The piece fell apaaart... for the fifth time... That's fuuunnnyyy..." - then you have the right mindset. (Stay sober, though, IKEA furniture has a tendency to bite if your mind's not clear.) This will make you assemble the piece faster.
And yes - if you ever wondered - I'm Swedish.

1. As you can see these are three of IKEA's cutting board 'Stolthet'. I plan to use them as raised surfaces on my desk. I'll probably put my laptop on one, and boxes for small items on the others. They'll also serve as a barrier so I don't push things too close to the farthest end. The desktop will go up and down, I don't want a stray pencil to draw a line on my wall.
2. I cleaned the boards using dish detergent and water. IKEA recommends a "mild soap" but this is close enough. While I won't use these for food the cleaning removed dust and lose fibres, saving me some hassle during oiling.
3. I dried the boards using a cloth, but didn't wait for them to get bone dry. Rule of thumb is that a slightly moist surface wicks oil into the material better than a dry one.
4. It's a bit of a vengeance to oil something using a cloth. As a kid someone (my father or a woodworking teacher) taught me that _only_ a brush would do in woodworking, even when you put on fluids that would benefit from other methods. Nowadays every skilled craftsperson I see, from Adam Savage to Laura Kampf, use a cloth or a sponge, so _there_. The oil is cheap cannola oil. Works fine with stuff you can clean off and re-oil from time to time.
5. The reason why I don't put a protective layer on my kitchen table while working. I bought it for 50SEK at a thriftstore, and later someone put burn marks on it. I don't need to baby this piece - it's perfect!
6. Now I'll let the boards soak for a few hours. Maybe you can see that I put on a rather generous layer of oil. After a while I'll rub out any pooling over the entire surface, and if the boards are sticky tomorrow I'll gently clean the surplus.
As IKEAhacks go this is more of a hack-ish rather than an actual one. Still, I'm bending the "rules of usage" so I'll file it under this category anyway.

I've reached a "What the heck!" point. (Ie. when you have one or more projects that have stalled, yet they still brew in your mind, and at last you say "What the heck!" and finish them.) Since I've ordered a new desk for my work place I really want to finish this part of my home. I want to make those cushions for the couches, because I want them back. The pieces for the floor boxes I've cut out are dangerously close to caving in due to gravity. And, since the new desk is larger I need to cut out a hole at the back of the chest to make place for an electrical outlet (behind that fake iron stove in the picture).
I need to figure out what to do with the old desk. In the long run I'll probably disassemble it for parts, but I wonder if I can have them make a touch down as foyer furniture first. Currently I'm using the setup the last owner left, and it makes me feel like I'm living in someone else's house. Especially since he was so much taller than me and I have to jump to retrieve my hats from the hat shelf. I may also need to rearrange my dragon corner (ie. the storage for my sewing machines), since I'm in risk of committing A Grand Furniture Swappening. We'll see.
Today is my day of rest, _and_ I've sprained a foot, so I'll concentrate on a few, small projects I can do while sitting, like assembling a small rolling cart and giving those three desktop stands a lick of oil. IKEA call the latter "cutting boards", but they are obviously desktop stands. You see it too, right? Don't ask me why I got three - it just felt right.
I declare next week a week of maker frenzy! Go!!!

Sprained my ankle as I was walking to the bus to get my covid booster. I've accepted my fate; the next few days will be on the fast food side and a bit messier than I'm used to. The foot is healing though.

Sometimes it's the little things. I use those two crates for dirty laundry and for assorted recycling. The idea is to bring them down to the basement and sort their content into finer categories. But you know how it is; you procrastinate, and suddenly you have The Mound of Sorrow and Regret looming in the foyer. Today I battled the thing and came out victorious! My reward is a maker day tomorrow.
