Four years ago I set two New Year’s resolutions and I’ve kept up with them consistently. I haven’t missed one day for 1461 days so far. I’m headed into year five. Resolution 1: I will write 100 words or edit for 10 minutes a day. The goal behind this originally was to work on my […]
1.1.2025 15:51New Year’s Resolutions Year 5For a number of reasons but mostly it’s my job. I have to think about what I’m doing each day, what we’re doing next week, or next month. When a unit is done, my partner and I talk about what we plan on doing differently next year. Along with that as things change in the […]
29.12.2024 16:07Future, mostly futureSome days playing is joking with my students or playing classroom games. Some days for me, playing is actively playing games (board or video) with my husband and son. Playing can also be watching one of them play and participating by watching and commenting (invited comments, not backseat game play). I’m really not good at […]

It really is, they make a wild claim and I say show me, give me proof and it's almost never a reliable accurate site.
24.12.2024 15:38Comment on Have they? by kedavis99I’ve never told my students my own beliefs, but I definitely can’t resist the urge to correct or at least challenge their ideas when they are based on premises. It’s a delicate line :-)

You're welcome! This activity ended up being so much fun. My kids really want to do it again.
23.12.2024 15:50Comment on Archetypes and Symbolism by kedavis99I saw this prompt days ago and each time I come across it I think about it a bit more. I’m not saying my views haven’t ever changed at all or shifted but mostly I still believe what I’ve believed for years. My reasons for my beliefs have changed as I’ve done more research but […]
23.12.2024 15:49Have they?Every year Christmas is filled with memories and making memories. When we decorate the tree we talk about the ornaments. We have some from both my parents and my husband’s family on our tree. I also have several from former students. We start watching Christmas specials as soon as Thanksgiving is over. Now, most of […]
23.12.2024 02:01ChristmasThis is awesome. I know all these archetypes, but I need to start hitting them more with my students. Thanks for sharing.
20.12.2024 20:20Comment on Archetypes and Symbolism by Not all who wander are lostWe hit symbolism hard all year long starting with students creating their submissions for team banner. During our dystopian unit, we also cover character archetypes. As we headed into winter break, I was looking for ideas of things to do. Last year at the December meeting of the PD group I was in we did […]
20.12.2024 19:32Archetypes and SymbolismToday is the last day of school for the semester so tonight, hubby, kiddo, and I will be playing a bunch of video games and maybe a board game or two just to relax before the craziness of Christmas. We’ll also watch some Christmas videos on YouTube, things like walkthroughs of light displays, Christkindl markets […]
19.12.2024 15:36Video gamesHonestly… well, mostly. I teach language arts so I designed my classroom to be my ideal environment for reading and writing. Lighting is a combination of soft and natural light with the window uncovered as much as I dare, Christmas lights, and lamps. Soft surfaces, there are loads of rugs and pillows in my room […]
18.12.2024 16:07My classroomFrom the US and was born in 1976. It was the 200th anniversary of the country’s existence. Yeah, we’re such babies when it comes to country age in the world. I know there were big celebrations. I don’t know much else. I do know special quarters were minted for the year. My father used to […]
17.12.2024 16:03Bicentennial babyThese are my two top creative pursuits. I’m actually taking a day off of writing fiction, specifically a fan fic, to write this. I’ve been feeling a bit burned out on the story. I really want to finish it but I’m stalling out and sometimes when that happens it’s just better to take a break. […]

The Giver really is a great 8th grade text. It segues or pairs really nicely with Fahrenheit 451 for those who can handle it. Funny the things each class I've taught it to catch or miss :)
12.11.2024 18:40Comment on The Giver unit by Not all who wander are lostThe Giver was a fantastic book to read. I'm sure it's fun reading it with your 8th graders
