A tale of many protests: Steve McQueen, a filmmaker not shy of raising thorny topics, has curated a photography exhibition titled “Resistance.” Ths show, on display at the Turner Contemporary in Southeast England, showcases 100 years of protest in the UK stating with 1903’s suffrage protests to those in 2003 reacting against the Iraq War. It would seem to me that public-facing blogs and open networks are a lot less marginalized than walled-garden internet platforms with covertly manipulated algorithms and impulsive internal decisions like this. To me, it's the person solely found within those walled gardens that chooses exile from the greater whole.
13.1.2025 18:24Comment on How to Disappear Defiantly by M DonaldsonI heard a keynote speech at a university graduation long ago I attended for a now dearly departed friend. . . It was a communications professional discussing wireless technologies and the concept of convergence, which was to him and many others over two decades ago an unequivocally hopeful and good thing, something to aspire to achieving. Fast-forwarding to now its largely been attained, and one thing that the social media reality has made painfully clear is that most people don't actually care to talk to or interact with those with whom they disagree. The truly ambivalent will be able to ride through the chop, perhaps to their benefit(?) Meanwhile those who are idealists will be marginalized by the very nature of seeking a quieter niche to disappear into, away from the larger drone of a suffering, ignorant, and contentious mass. The dilemma requires either a stand or no stand at all, for hegemony will always = cultural force + consent. Subscribed, and thank you for your thoughts.

13.1.2025 13:41Comment on Brightening the Forest by How to Disappear DefiantlyThis post was originally intended for the actual friends I share on Facebook, not necessarily the ‘added friends’ who I don’t know in real life. 13.1.2025 13:41How to Disappear DefiantlyHakobune‘s guitar is processed like one hundred Guthries, ringing with reverb abandon as chords stretch into warm, elongated vibrations. The 2019 album Rain Studies is a full-spectrum affair; it alternately plays and washes away intruding sounds. Its CTwins-spirit is best transmitted on “Tenkyuu,” which sounds like muting everything but a single guitar track on Victorialand‘s […]

29.8.2024 10:22Comment on Commodifying Coziness and the Rise of Chill-Out Capitalism by Jay WinterbrookIt’s easy to get distracted by the number 23. Not only are we told it’s everywhere by thinkers as prestigious as Robert Anton Wilson and Jim Carrey, but those two digits look and feel special. How about a 23rd album? Perhaps that’s magical in some way (especially if the KLF ever got there), but to […]
18.7.2024 21:20Shimmering & Shining with The Black WatchI hear you. Digital downloads are definitely a solution to consider. They offer convenience and accessibility for sharing high-quality music directly from artists' websites. Platforms like Bandcamp add a social element which is great for community interaction. Your statement on the Greyfade website clarifies the importance of sustainability in supporting art music, emphasizing the need for viable methods that benefit artists long-term. It's crucial to explore these options to ensure art music continues to thrive in a sustainable manner.

4.6.2024 17:17Comment on The Children…’s Blues is a Primal Yowl by The Children… blog interview – music by Lucas GonzeThe songs on The Children...'s A Sudden Craving are delightfully ominous, spurring a complexity in their deep darkness—a reflection, rather than a warning, of what comes after those three dots. It might be those spooky movie kids with glowing eyes, or it could just be something chasing childhood's innocence down a night's cityscape. Let's find out.
3.6.2024 13:54The Children…’s Blues is a Primal YowlIn an extensive interview, Joseph Branciforte discusses LP2, his remarkable album with vocalist Theo Bleckmann, how a pleasing result always beats out creative process, and the high-fidelity ethos of his Greyfade imprint.

My right eye (previously) was pierced with lasers the other day in preparation for next week’s big surgical procedure. Tiny little holes. I have some curatorial notes today. Memora8ilia, the “filing cabinet for 8sided.blog,” is presently hosted on Tumblr. I’m in the process of moving it to a self-hosted site, at which point I’ll get more active with it. I’m not necessarily moving it off Tumblr due to recent controversies. However, that does serve as a reminder […]

22.2.2024 18:10Comment on Ballad of the Blog by toddI should talk about my podcast work. It’s going well! My main gig is the Spotlight On podcast, hosted by music industry vet and erudite interviewer Lawrence Peryer (LP). 21.2.2024 17:28Time Travel, ExpressedToday, I’m listening to Im Fünfminutentakt, an album by the enigmatic act Fred und Luna released last April. In playful press releases, Fred und Luna are purported to be moon-based explorers observing and commenting on Earthly activities through the language of music. This set-up, along with a synthesized and intentional retro sound that those same […]
18.2.2024 21:57Brightly Transmitted InfluencesThis morning, I took a photo of the sunrise over my backyard lake. I used to do this almost every day—my sunrise diary. 16.2.2024 23:10Elongated InstallationsThere’s nothing here, and it’s like I’ve tumbled into an invisible thicket. 21.11.2023 16:48Comment on Wheel Around the Filter by Nadeem KhanThe songs on SYMBOL's I Am Humble and Powerful evoke both clashing hues and colors that beautifully bleed into each other.
7.11.2023 23:41Wheel Around the FilterBreath Versus Beats is a geological sound adventure formed by three elements: Simon Berz, Toshinori Kondo, and Bill Laswell.
5.11.2023 16:56Simon Berz’s Geological WorldWe don't need any more dystopias (fictional or otherwise), but Alex Lopes's gentle approach to the year 3023 offers a mirror-angled lens on another way to tell the story. The piano remains among the rubble, it seems, evoking centuries-distant memories.
2.11.2023 18:18The Piano Remains Among the RubbleI have nothing that coherent (i.e., reassuring) to say about Songtradr’s acquisition of Bandcamp. There’s an opinion that Songtradr appears to be a better fit for what Bandcamp does than Epic Games. I’m not so sure. Songtradr is interested in exploiting art (‘exploiting’ is used here factually, not judgmentally) rather than creating art. One could […]
30.9.2023 15:41A Mess of HeadachesToday, the final musicREDEF newsletter with Matty Karas as ‘curator’ was sent out. 26.5.2023 16:20Pour Out a Little CoffeeYou may be familiar with a derisive term said in film circles: homework movies. This phrase refers to influential achievements in cinema that one doesn’t necessarily enjoy but are requirements for students of film history. Your mileage may vary here; some consider Citizen Kane the most obvious example of a ‘homework movie,’ but I find it […]
20.2.2023 18:23Noise AnnoysMy eyes are a mess. You probably already know this. Funny thing: I’ve only been admitted to a hospital once — at the age of 12, I stabbed my leg with a knife while building a tree fort on Christmas Eve — and still have all my organs. That includes my tonsils, my appendix, and even my […]
19.2.2023 20:25And the Heart Grows FonderElectronic music artist Ordos Mk.0 leans into the therapy aspect of his albums, presenting the three installments as a healing process for both the musician and the listener. 'Music as therapy' is a familiar trope, but, in answering my questions, Ordos Mk.0 brings a unique and interesting take.
